Yesterday my parents noticed one of our golden comet hens limping. When I let the chickens out this morning I noticed she still was, so I checked her legs and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them. There are no cuts or swelling, and the leg with the limp doesn't seem to be bent or twisted in any way that it shouldn't be. We borrowed a mesh crate from our neighbors, who also have chickens, put bedding, food and water in it, and brought our girl inside. She is still limping, which I expected, but she has also started panting as well. She is still eating and drinking, and there doesn't seem to be any problems besides the limping and panting. Does anyone know what is wrong with her?

When she limps, does she hold the leg up to her body, or does she try to put weight on it? How hot is the temperature in her crate? Could she be overheated or upset that she is separated? Can you place her near the other chickens for company? Make sure that she is drinking well. Was she vaccinated for Mareks? Injuries are more common. Sometimes you can see green bruising, redness, or swelling. Look at her footpad for any bumblefoot scab.

When she walks she tries to put weight on it, but when she stands she will hold it up. The temperature in the crate isn't too hot, maybe she is just upset from being separated. She's definitely drinking enough. She was not vaccinated, I only found out about Mareks today when I was trying to figure out why she was limping. There are no scabs, bruises, or anything abnormal on her feet. She may have just tripped and injured it, but I'm still not sure.

How is your girl doing? I have a 5 month old black sex link who is doing the same thing - started very mildly limping last week, seemed to be better on Sunday, and yesterday afternoon and this morning, getting worse - visibly limping, trying to put weight on it when she walks, holding it up when she stands. She's acting normal (eating, drinking, laying, even took a dust bath this weekend) otherwise. No visible or obvious injuries, and I've checked her several times. I'm thinking of putting her in the sick pen (area sectioned off inside the run for chickens who need healing) for a while and either bringing her in at night or keeping her in there at night so she can't roost (if she has a sprain, I'm wondering if getting on and off the roost is keeping it from healing). Anyway, hope your girl is okay!

Sorry for the late reply! She's doing a lot better now! After a few days she was able to put weight on her leg, and now she's back in good shape and out with the rest of the flock. Has your girl improved at all?
