I have a five month old silkie hen and rooster. She is terrified of him and he is jumping on her all of the time. I got them for pets hoping both were going to be hens because I have bigger hens for eggs and I don’t want baby chicks. I want to find him another home because I have a hard time listening to her cry and watch her run and try and hide from him. My my question is if she lays an egg and she hatches it and it turned out to be a rooster, will that rooster want to fertilize her eggs also?

Please separate those two immediately. Your poor pullet is probably terrified. And yes, if she lays an egg that he fertilized and the chick is a cockerel, then both males will try and mate with your Silkie girl. Chickens have no issues with incest

Put your little cockerel in a kennel or something. He will continue to take advantage of her. And her being terrified like that can impact her personality long term. :hmm

DON'T let her hatch eggs her first year... her body is still developing as well as her mind. They lose condition when they sit.

If she decides to sit AND you do want chicks... one option to help avoid more cockerels is getting young sexed feed store chicks and tucking under her at night.

Put him up on Craigslist farm and garden section or maybe FB if you use that. We eat our extra Silkie cockerels. :drool

Okay thank you. I have separated them and he can’t get to her anymore.

Thank you I have separated them.

My silkie screamed and ran from the rooster , the other 3 hens were totally ok with him.

I’m not sure if it’s possible , but she got skinny , was always hiding and died very young,
Lesson learned? Get rid of the rooster

I have him on a waiting list at the animal shelter here in Jackson. As soon as they call me he is gone! But in the meantime I have them separated and he cannot get to her now. Thank you.

Happy as a clam with her piece of fresh corn and no rooster!
