the barred looking ones have a definite browness to them. the black ines, there are two, have that beetle green, and one has silver penciling around the neck and chest while the other has golden penciling.

The first one looks like a Black Australorp or Jersey Giant. It look like mine. What color are the bottoms of its feet? Yellow = Jersey Giant White/Pink = Australorp ;)

I think you called it, they're just mixed breed hens. I have similar looking black hens with gold or silver on the neck from my mixed flock. My understanding is this comes from breeding a black bird to any one of several other breeds. And the barred birds have a barred parent, likely a barred rock, but they're also mixed. Looks like they'll all be brown egg layers, so enjoy the eggs in a few months.

I wanted to get full bred hens, but no one chickens around here and those who do only sell non producers, which does me no good. mixes like these run around $10, full breed hens around $20-$25 a bird. total craziness..
