I've currently got:
4 Delaware hens (hatchery stock)
4 Australorp hens
2 Buff Orpington hens
From MMcM I'm ordering:
10 Australorp hens
10 Buff Orpington hens
1 Golden Polish (standard) hen
1 White Leghorn hen
1 Black Minorca hen
5 White Silkies (bantam)
+ 1 free "rare/exotic" mystery chick.
From some reputable breeder's here on the forum:
12 Blue Wheaten Ameraucana eggs
12 Heritage Delaware eggs (I hope to get a roo out of these eggs!)
...needless to say, I'm going to have quite a few fuzz butts running around in the upcoming months. Eventually I'm hoping to whittle down the flock size to 32. 2 roos with 30 laying hens. I wouldn't count the Silkies or the Polish in the laying hens numbers though, they're just for kicks. And of course I don't expect all 24 hatching eggs to hatch or be exactly what I want (all pullets! with 1 Dell roo!
that's not too realistic though.) So I'll be finding new homes for some of the hatchlings after I've decided which ones I'm keeping.
I didn't ever think I wanted a flock of rainbow layers, but it looks like that's what I've ended up with. Browns, Whites, Blues. I may cross some of my BW girls when they're ready to create some EE's that lay a green/olive egg. It'll all make for interesting dozens that I'll eventually be selling at the farmer's market!
