This is my first time raising chicks (such a joy!) and while I have no experience, I'm beginning to wonder if my little black and white frizzle "pullet" is blossoming into a cockerel before my eyes...

(S)he is one of the most assertive of my six and the only one so far that has pecked me defensively. I also noticed her creeping on one of my little silkies that was "dust bathing" in the shavings like she might be curious about mounting her. I know they're too young for that but am wondering if they start play acting these types of things early or if it's even gender-related:eek:

The comb is quite a bit pinker than the other frizzle's, hopefully the photos show that clearly enough. Anyone able to help me with a guess? Really hoping she's just a pretty pink-combed pullet

Thank you! I will post an update in a couple weeks. They are so much fun... I suppose one cockerel out of the six wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Maybe an excuse for a few more females :D

I think it's a pullet. Mottled bantam cochins always look redder in the comb for some reason. It doesn't have any wattles and my boys were sprouting wattles at 4 weeks. My boys had huge wattles and combs by 6 weeks.

6 weeks (pullet on the right same age):

I had two that were very friendly and assertive that I was convinced were boys - they also had quite red combs from a young age. They turned out to be pullets.

Both are pullets
