Wonder if any copper scrappers take pennies though... or is that considered destruction of government property if you melt them down? Seems like it would have to be something crazy like that or scrappers would just buy up pennies and be done with it.

My dad had a business and someone paid with a $100 bill. He marked it with a pen and it was real. But later when my dad put the bill up to the light, it was actually a $5 bill.

They take a $5 bill and bleach it out. Then they print a $20 or a $100 over it.

So it tests real with a pen, but if you hold it up you can see the watermark of Lincoln's face.

I've worked at a casino for just about 14 years now. All the slot machines have sensors to read the strip in the bills. IF people try to pass off fakes, it is at the tables and cashier. As a dealer, thousands of dollars pass through my hands daily. About 99% of the time, people don't even realize they have the fakes. I've encountered real scammers and watched guys get hauled off to jail too. Trying to pass 1 gets you watched. A whole wallet of them is guaranteed to get the cops called.

Those pens are not foolproof. Any of the older bills before 1959 were printed on a different material and the pens react to them. Something as simple as spraying hairspray on money or running your money through the laundry is sometimes enough to set them off. I also find it amusing that it will turn any kind of cloth/paper/etc black, but will stay yellow on your skin. I guess I must be for real!

I have seen the fake $5 turned $50's. That is actually one of the smartest methods yet. When you deal with alot of money, the first thing you go for is the texture of the money in your hands. All the fakes I've ran across just feel 'off' except for those. At our casino, we have to use the pen on anything $10 and up. The next thing we look for is the strip and watermark. Then you look at the bill itself. I had some that were totally off-center. I've had some where you could mark them black everytime one 1 side and yellow on the other side.

I like the metal one dollar bills, but I guess if I had a large bill at the feed store, my pockets would break!

It's sad isn't it....

Well, I'm out to take care of the critters in a few... I received a USPS money order for eggs and at first the postal worker said it was fake and after 2 machine checks and a check on her computer she said it was real.

I guess it won't stop anywhere!

Maybe I'll just ask our farm customers for coins.

I am learning to barter more and more and spend less.... I do not think things will ever be the same....

My "chicken" project is for the barter and what I can do with the eggs at barter and swap groups... I do and can make a good profit each month!!!

My BIL and SO had just gone to the bank (its a small chain bank and have been going for 20+ years). There is a krystal right next door so they decided to walk over for lunch.
The manager took their order and when he tried to pay she started raising cain saying it was fake and shes not taking it. They didnt know what to do. They said they had just come from the bank and it couldnt be. She yelled and yelled and yelled about it in front of everyone there then marched him over to the bank. She was going to show him.
They walk in the bank and all the clerks were 'Oh hey! Back again?' real friendly like. They looked at all his money and sent him on his marry way with his real money.
They lady didnt even say she was sorry for embarrassing the fool out of him AND made them pay for their food. I told the SO they were dumb for buying food there in the first place.

I understand you have to watch out, but to make a huge scene then march him over to the bank in front of everyone like hes a little child?
