50 degrees too cold for 4+5 week chicks?

They don't need heat. My chicks wean themselves from their MHP at 4 - 5 weeks with night time temps in 30's.

Thank you. I did use some heat for a few days just to be safe, although I don't think they needed it. They actually moved away from the heat source.

I watch Momma chicken and baby chicks move around her during the day even in the winter. But at night they are under her so I would say keep a nonlite heat lamp for night and off during day. Justin Rhodes did a video the other day about him doing that a couple days ago. I think it’s the porta brooder video

That is funny. I think that you could probably be ok moving them into their own apartment for good. Check the weather...is it going to dip to freezing in the next week? What about Rain? I had to keep Bri g mine in because it was cold and pouring rain here and I didn’t want a dead wet chick.

If your coop doesn’t leak and they have protection from the wind you won’t have a cold wet chick.

Yep, when they’re moving away from the heat source, they are telling you they don’t need it anymore.

A relatively simple and inexpensive option is the MHP. Look in the Raising Baby Chicks section of the forum. I think the thread is MHP in the Brooder or something like that.

My moveable, covered pen I plan to move daily, large pen is covered with tarps, chicks will be 5 weeks old next week, my concern is the ground is often wet, night temps 35-40 F. Do I need I need to offer these broilers a way to get off the wet ground?

My chicks are are three weeks and a couple of days old 2 leghorns and two black one (I don’t know what kind). One of the leghorns and one of the black ones have more feathers than the other two. Gets to about 56 degrees at night, but in the low to upper 80s during the day. Can they stay out in a coop with no heat at night? I am attaching pics in the hopes someone can help identify the black ones‘ breed. Thanks!
