Don't beat yourself up. Beagles are a hunting breed. Some dogs can be trained to leave them alone, and some have too strong of an instinct. He probably doesn't even know why you're mad at him anymore, though. I think with dogs discipline has to be swift. They don't carry grudges and don't understand when we do. I'm glad your other chicken still has friends to hang out with.

agreed. Barny probably doesn't even know why you were mad in the first place, let alone why you are STILL mad.
Some dogs can be taught to leave them alone unsupervised, others can't. One of my dogs can be trusted. The other is still a pup, but with his higher drive working dog background, it's unlikely.
Most of the time, dogs don't see the chicken and think "mmmm food" Instead, they see the birds squaking and flapping and think "oohhh toy!" It's just that the chicken gets squished in the process.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but, you may have a problem putting your younger pullets in with the older hens! I learned the hard way years ago. Chickens aren't exactly friendly with each other! Especially when the new birds fall really short on the pecking order. I have had younger pullets killed and seriously maimed by older hens and overly aggressive roo's. Just thought I might add that! Sorry for your loss and hopefully there will be no more!
