55 degrees too cold for chicks?

I have been putting them out with the big girls for several days now, but separated in a smaller pen within the big pen. My husband let them walk around with the girls today and there was a little pecking, but nothing serious. They are in a very tight, but ventilated rubbermaid storage shed that has been converted to a coop with pine shavings and a roost. I looked in on them at eight o'clock, and they were all sleeping. The babies were not even close to each other in there. I hope they will be ok. I have done this before, but it was in thesummer time and was warm. Thank you for your input. I love this SITE!!!!

Well....they survived just fine. It actually was 45 degrees when I got up this morning. They seemed to be fine. So...I guess they are out for good! Thank the Lord!!!! I still haven't completely mixed them in with the big girls...they are still separated. But at least they are OUT OF MY BATHROOM!!!!!!!

I put my chicks outside by themselves for the first time last night. I don't know what temp it dropped to, but I'm guessing around 35- 40 or so. I left a heat lamp out there with them, covered the little pen with plywood and a tarp and crossed my worried fingers that they would not be overly upset at being left out. When I checked them this morning, they were all huddled under the lamp, but seemed no worse for the wear. In fact, they seemed happier than they are in the house. They weren't even peeping, even after I peeked in to check on them. I am not going to integrate mine in with the other hens, I want to keep the pens separate, so I don't have to worry about that!

I'm glad to hear they did well! Hopefully, the weather will only get warmer and the cold nights are done until fall! I tell you .... the weather has been crazy around here lately!

i am in central pa and mine were out last week at 6 weeks old when it was in the 40's and rainy and they are fine. They huddeled up to sleep when they got cold and they were fine. they are too big to be smothering eachother anymore.
