Awesome!! Thanks for the resource. If you get any additional information on the specifics of the birds, let me know. AFAIK the grey broilers are only available through Hubbard (and possibly the blacks, too). I've never herad of the other kind, except the Red Cornish. A hatchery advertised those in Oregon, but said they were 14 week birds. So, I want to say they are not hybrids but a strain of Cornish which is red. But, I could be wrong.

I can't imagine you'll find anyone selling anything but yellow skinned birds here in the US, just as it's very hard not to find a white skinned chicken in the UK.

Hi Greyfields--Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean "only available through Hubbard"?

I read through the description in the Myer's catalog and they describe the Red Bros and the Yellow Jackets as having "...yellow feet and white skin." If you want the complete description I can post it.

They also have a three pages of other chicken breeds.

Very very few hatcheries own a single chicken. They buy them as hatching eggs from the large indsutrial breeders (Hubbard, Ross-Cobb, etc). So when I say only available, you just have several retail hatcheries buying hatching eggs from the same source.

we're down here in south houston and my friend is suppose to be getting hers from JM in a couple of weeks. it's in the 90's down here now with nights in the upper 70's with humidity at a 1000%. i'll keep an eye out on how things go for her.

i've been hesitant to order not because of the heat, but because of the pox. it hasn't rained at all down here, and with the cooler weather until just a couple weeks ago, i haven't had an outbreak of pox until just last week. i've lost too many chicks to those darn mosquitos last year and don't know if i want to try and raise chicks this time of year with that threat. the older ones get the dry pox but the babies always end up with the wet, which pretty much kills them in less than a week.

Has anyone raised the Red Boiler from Welp Hatchery? Is it the same as the Freedom Ranger and or the Red Bro from Ideal? I'm thinking about ordering these (Red Boilers) from Welp, and just looking for some expert advice or previous experience.

I'm currently raising a batch of red broilers, but mine came from JM Hatchery (www.jmhatchery.com) I have been very pleased with mine and you can see their pics on another thread under the meat birds section from just a few days ago. I know that several of us are raising them this year, from various places. Not sure if anyone has any from Welp, though.

My first 50 are 8 days old today. Haven't lost any yet, knock on wood. Handsome little birds I must say.

They are...and feisty little devils, I must say! What was the coloration on yours like? Most of mine would fall into the mid-range or a red, I'd say. I have maybe 10-15% that are a very dark red (pretty birds) and 3 very 'blonde' looking ones (buff colored). The personalities of the blonde colored ones is definitely different from the rest. They are definitely the rulers of the roost and I believe that one of them will end up being my largest bird.

I've gotta say...I'm loving these guys!

Never mind...I am getting ahead of myself...yours are only 8 days old, so a little early to tell. Sheesh!
