5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Fertility check? ronott1 can you please explain. I just got 12 Brahma eggs and would love to check fertility on them.
Fertility is sometimes checked by cracking open a few eggs to verify the presence of the "bullseye". I think people mostly do this with their own eggs or eggs that are quite inexpensive. I wouldn't want to crack any special purchased eggs open to check. Put them in the bator at set time and in a few days you'll know.

you crack the egg open and look for the embryo. It will be one side of the egg yolk so if you do not see it, turn the yolk over. If the egg is fertile, it will have an upraised outer edge and look like a donut or Bullseye.

Pictures are from the Sherriff

Ron -- Thanks, I think these are the best clearest pics I've ever seen of this, esp. the INfertile one still has the white dot. You have been posting a ton of useful info. I remember you worked really hard last NYDH too. Just wanted call out & let you know it is helping the ppl who asked the ? AND lots of others reading posts. YOU ROCK :>

So..... Count me out of this.  I am likely going to have to cull chickens one by one.  The one I injected yesterday was looking better today.... but she came off her egg and moved onto some golf balls so the egg is no good.......  At least for hatching, it was pretty cold.  But, one other chicken is showing signs of disease now.....  SO far, all those that have been sick, have come from the same place....  So, we're going to cull one by one as they show symptoms, then hopefully some will survive .... I have grown attached, but especially to 3 of them, so I hope they make it.  So far, they are ok.  But, in spring, we may move the coop/build a new one, and keep these guys where they are 'til they pass on........

:hit

I'm continuing to become frustrated and almost feel like giving up because I Didn't think it'd be this hard!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with Ron's advice here. Don't be discouraged, this happens to people all the time. If it were me, I would treat the birds I didn't want to lose - did you say you used Tylan on the one bird and she's doing better now? If I was that worried about losing the others, I would treat them too and then toss eggs. I know this is not normally recommended, but you sound desperate. Good luck to you.

I have ordered Rhodebars, Legbars and Isbars! Cant wait to get them cooking!

So you've got green layers, blue layers and brown layers? Are they all sexable at hatch? I know the Legbars and Rhodebars are, just don't know about the Isbars...

I never got to the Post Office yesterday, but 2 of my egg orders 'should' be there! Woo Hoooo! I hope I have pics for you later.

I agree! Best fertility test for eggs that you purchased is to put them in the incubator and check for development after a few days.

OK! I am still waiting in one more package of eggs, but it was in Wilmington, DE yesterday at 4pm (1/2 hour from my house) hopefully it's at my PO this am. :fl
