5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep my eggs from breaking in the nesting box? I try to keep the shavings nice and thick but if I'm not careful the one hen will move all the shavings up the side of the nesting box. Then when she goes to lay an egg it breaks because it hits directly on the wood.

Cut this to fit your nest box bottom

I have a lot less broken eggs using these. I have one for each nest box.

And so it begins!! I am setting mine tonight in hopes that all the EGGcitment will be done by the time I have to go back to work on the 2nd.

I was hoping for 7 cochin bantam eggs, BUT to the rescue came Msladyhawke and I have a mix of bantam eggs.
And yes those are names on the eggs! My daughters have each claimed an egg, now lets just pray they turn into chicks!
that is a lot of pressure for hatching them.

Do you have alternates? If the ones with names on them are clears, have them pick another egg.

Set them!

Take a picture and let me know how many you set.

Ok, I set them around 4:00 my time. 15 eggs..Rhodebars and a few Splash Marans. On the 10th.

Here is a photo. I have more coming that I wanted for this hatch a long too. Should be Thursday, hopefully. She is moving, and was snatching up all she could for me. :) Sharing those with a friend that is going to try doing the hatch a long for the first time. Will get photos of those when I get them too.

My drive is finally clear of snow (had a total of 13 inches at my house), so I will be getting eggs -- more than a dozen SFH crosses, Maran crosses, and either Silkie or bantam Cochins (I hope the latter, as that group are show birds, but I can't tell if it's the Silkie hen or the Cochin hen laying these eggs) -- to SoManyHats tomorrow on our way to swim team. I am setting 11-12 purebred SFH eggs from my flock (depends on what eggs I find in the morning). I find SFH can be difficult to hatch, so we shall see. I'm going to move the bator in my master bedroom closet, which in theory should help the temperature remain stable if the kids will stay out of there.

I hope the hatch well for you!

Marans eggs are lost in the mail, no one can find them
