5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Here are a few. These are old pics when I just had this single coop. The coops are now set up like a chicken village lol

Did you get plans for this? Or just make it? I love your idea of the chicken village concept and I might just do that now that I finally have space for it. :)

I took advantage of the snow we got today to look for predators prints around our coops…I was pretty surprised to find the 2 legged type of predator has been on my property and around my coops…Seriously?? I really can NOT imagine walking onto someone's property and just looking around at their stuff…

THIS is the land to the rear of our property and where the footprints came from….now WHERE the heck is this jerk parking???
For the record...Ray was in the car the whole time we were at your house last night. No random wanderings over here, lol! My guess is hunters!

Quote: I have the Wal-Mart therm/hygro's too, and they are not in sync with the humidity, let me tell you. Getting pretty frustrated right now!

Quote: I've heard putting a sponge or cup of water works. I havent tried this though, so backup would be appreciated.
I don't put cups of water to avoid accidental drowning, but I have put cups with soaked paper towels in them. The last hatch I remember doing where boosting the humidity became an issue (duck eggs at lockdown) I fixed my problem by putting a sanitary napkin (yes, your read that right) directly under the vent hole, I used a straw to direct the water into the sanitary napkin. held the moisture and nobody drowned….worked great.
OMGoodness, I've used the sanitary napkin a.k.a. Maxi Pad too!! For containers that I leave out in the open Ray bends 1/4 inch wire to fit the openings so they don't drown!

WOW! He IS gorgeous!!
Oh, I am so confused! When I sold my last Serama roo the buyer argued that he looked more like a Japanese bantam. I said he was sold to me as a Black Tailed Buff Serama, but he looked just like this(but buff). How the H@!! do you tell the difference?

Quote: The only thing I will add to this is that for the Cinco de Mayo hatch-a-long I decided to throw caution to the wind with humidity. I didn't and couldn't keep it where I would have normally. At the end of the hatch I raised it as much as possible, and had a VERY bad outcome. I think I should have always ensured it was at least at 20-25% and I didn't . Upping it at the "last call" didn't work for me at all. It was my only bad hatch to date, and I still keep kicking myself over it!

Wow!! I go out for the day to pick up my last eggs and do some shopping and I fall 20 pages behind!

thanks for that.. im not about to throw caution to the wind but i wont be worried about fluctuations of a few percentages here and there

This coop was our first and DH insisted we buy plans for it and buy all new materials to build it. I like the coop but wasn't happy about the cost of money it took to build. All of the other coop were build either mostly or even completely out of recycled items (4chicken coops, 1small chick grow out house, 1 turkey coop, 1 turkey grow out pen, 1 duck house, 1 goat house and goat fence, and 3 chick brooders) Im to the point now where I can build a complete coop or animal house and sometimes the fence for zero cost.

The plans for the purple house I posted pics of are on the internet just google Daisy Coop.

If I can find a pic of my "chicken village" I will post it.

thats okay! the more the merrier!! im already planning with my boyfriend how im going to expand my coop because i know that my flock is going to grow exponentially once i start getting chicks... Im lucky hes so handy and can make something out of scraps laying around :)
The hazards of owning an incubator!

i think thats what im doing this time too! and im going to document everything to see if i need to tweak it :)

just to be clear, are you referring to the troughs labeled one and two? or the three that are in the center with no numbers?
and i would love to see your set up! i actually have some airline tubing and a turkey baster all ready but i wasnt exactly sure how to set it all up. what im most stressed about is on day 18 i have to candle my eggs, remove my turner, set up my aquarium tubing, and then make sure it is all absolutely perfect cuz i wont be able to fix it after that! im afraid that my eggs will be cold by the time i figure it all out
Mine aren't numbered. I have had my Genesis for a few years. I am referring to the two outermost channels. It will be clear when you see the pictures. Don't worry about the eggs getting cold. At that point the chicks generate/hold enough heat that it isn't a problem.
