5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Questions:

If I have a black laced RIR over barred rock, will they have sex-link chicks?

Since we are not supposed to open the bator often during lockdown, if you have multiple breeds in there and want to 'label' them, how do you do it? Should I number my eggs at last cull and take notes of what each chick looks like as they hatch...or leave the bator in the bathroom, run the shower for humidity, and open quick to pull 2-3 out at a time and leg band them? I have 8+ types of eggs in there!

Thanks!
I set up the Genesis for hatching like this. They were in rails and incubated together for the first 18 days.

This is the Lockdown set up:

use a sharpie and mark the eggs. Each basked hols up to 4 Regular eggs. Either zip tie or use a colored sharpie to mark the chicks on the foot. when they are older, you can use bands to identify them.

Yes. Do not get too paranoid.

I will be working with my Mom--she has an XP Computer and needs to replace it by next April.

With the lacing in there I'm not really sure. Since it's black laced and not any white in the feathering I would think it would be. From what I was reading on an older topic on byc it the white feathering that would mess up the head spots.

As for labeling eggs I have no idea. I use a sharpie when I seen veins or blood rings ect that me and I'm not sure if the sharpie is bad for egg or not.

Drive safe M. We're about to get another 6 inches of snow today as well. PM me when you get home, small world, i ended up with 2 cockerels out of eggs you shipped someone! :)

Will pm you what variety did they give you. I have new birds now. Working at getting size smaller. At the show we had a dUccle club meet and were discussing the size of the birds and how they were getting bigger and bigger. One of the breeders said it was due to the amount if protein we are feeding them, said that they need a lower protein and a change in what we feed the chicks. He has been getting smaller birds by hatching in winter and late spring and feeding the chicks fine screened corn and adults either hay or grass and scratch which is what I just started doing. Will see what happens with the first batch I hatch this winter. Can you send me pics if the cockerels

I use this post https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/261208/sex-linked-information if you scroll down to the black sex link part of his post it should answer your questions but the main part I see is

"~~5). Almost any variety (color) of male ( not including white or barred ) can be used in a black sex linked cross. White birds sometimes carry dominant white and or barring which would not work in a black sex linked cross. White males that do not carry dominant white or barring will work as the male in a black sex linked cross. White males like the white wyandotte or the white plymouth rock will work if they do not carry dominant white or barring."

The problem is I'm new to chickens and not 100% sure if lacing is considered a type of barring or not on the gene pool.

Edit : actually looking at his chart of what roosters can be used he does show SLW and GLW's so you should be fine
