5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Well, I put another dozen eggs in the bator. I guess I am doing a staggered hatch. I guess this is how it's going to be from now on. I can't imagine how many I will have in there when the girls are laying in high gear this spring. <chuckle> I may need an intervention.......

I just candled my eggs. They're very easy to see through. I only see 3 viable eggs so far

Out of 9 eggs originally (2 oozed and cracked due to freezing I think). The others are very clear and yellow with detached air cells. They're probably scrambled inside or more froze than I thought. Sighhhhhh. I wish I can find more people around me with eggs for the breeds I want. I hate shipping

I only have one jack russell... I can't imagine three! my little guy is relatively calm and submissive towards the chickens so I'm lucky...
thank you so much! luckily my goats aren't bred, they are still to young. and I will save that chicken sweater pattern! is it necessary to put sweaters on the chickens? it seems like they would appreciate booties more!

Well sometimes if your chicken has a hard molt she/he can loose too many feathers at once when it is too cold to be nearly featherless. Sometimes the roosters "attentions" can cause large bald spots on her back. Sometimes you just have a sick chilled chicken and having one on standby can save their lives. If you aren't skilled at knitting or crocheting you can always use the pattern to cut out a fleece jersey instead.

So if i dont see any veining today i shouldnt give up??? I should see some in the next 3 days or so?

If this is true this will be such a huge relief for me!!!

I haven't seen any veining either dont worry. I was told it can take up to seven days to see it and that after about ten days if you don't see it that's when to give up lol. don't worry :)

that makes sense. yeah I never learned how to knit, but I can sew pretty well! that would be a good project for these winter nights lol. thanks! I think I'll make one and then I'll be prepared :)

Yeah, I keep mine in for at least a week when I don't see veining "just in case" but in my experience, I can tell if an egg is fertile by day 3. I have a lot of clears this time.

NO!! do not give up on the hatch if you don't see veins today!! give eggs till day 10 at least some go slower due to lower heat or just developing slower.

Ok, im bery concerned! I saw 2 veins and literaily about one dozen of my eggs look like they have nothing and are very light and has a light colored yolk, and looks to have no compared to some other silkie eggs in the bator, which are very heavy and has a dark blob....

blob nada...

Should i just wait for a few more days? The light ones were refrigerated....would that make that much of a difference in the process of incubation?

For now I'm keeping all eggs in there in case hey sill have a possibility.... "Sigh."
The one on the left may very will have something going on in it. The one on the right might surprise you too. Do not toss any eggs until day 10
