5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

WOW I am finally caught up. I was gone for the weekend and when I came back Sunday night I was behind more than 300 posts. Im so glad to see everyone has been candling and it seems everyone is seeing lots of veining and development.

I took a quick peek at my eggs yesterday and so far out of my 32 shipped Silkie eggs 19 are developing well with great veining, 1 egg has a blood ring and 12 are clear(whether they are infertile or not developing due to shipping is unclear) The 3 Marans eggs and 3 OE eggs are much to dark to see into, I don't expect to be able to candle them at all. I will just keep my fingers crossed that they are fertile, developing, and hopefully hatch.

Bwahahahaha!! Well, he didn't ask about the pen with straw by the driveway, so 'ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies'…yup, that's my strategy.
Quote: Just googled Green Briar and we HAVE it…I've been meaning to find out what the heck that awful stuff is….none in the goat pen, I'll look for some later and see if they eat it..that stuff is OBNOXIOUS! still green this time of year and more thorns than I've ever seen on a plant….

Quote: Why Thank You! She's also a good milker, she was bred to a double blue gene, black & white buck…hoping for some blue eyed tri color babies.

Yep just scatter some handfuls out. It work best if you shove it around with the broom first. The rolling of the salt granules lift hair and dust right up out of the fibers. Finish with the vacuum but it needs the rolling action to pull the dirt up.
OK, but you go first. Gawd help me if DH ever saw me shaking out stock salt IN the house…I'm not even allowed to put it on the deck or the driveway. I'm NOT even joking…I sneak cat litter on the steps going to the chicken pens and PRAY for spring….yup, that's my strategy.

Completely unchicken related ~took my Lily goat on a 'date' today ~her fussing was REALLY getting to me…so hopefully

I hope you don't get an annoying baby like I did. She's cute but I swear she's part Nubian. All she does is scream whenever I go out there. Ugh she better watch it because I may just sell her if she keeps up...

My 5 month old buck is pure nubian & my 8 month old doe is pygmy/nubian cross. The only time they holler is when they want to go back to their pen for the night because it's getting dark, cold or raining. I would complain too if I were them & my owner wasn't moving fast enough...lol

Sat down last night to candle with dh and 13yo dd. We see Day 10 embryos clear as day...and shadows moving in the Marans!. They are about the size of a quarter now and very active.

Then dh asks me how many do you have in there, and I tell him 31. He says...ummm...are you sure? I say yep...I started with 32 and culled a clear one this weekend. So I count and there are 32, and I am like What.The.Heck? Sure enough...there are 32 chicks and I am having a blond moment. Either that or someone slipped in another egg. But it was likely a blond moment!

Chicken math is *confusing*!

I like to think of myself as fairly intelligent...but now I can't even count eggs???

I just went back to look at my original photo...and yes there were 33.

I was hoping for a second flock of not more than a dozen. Maybe I need to get prepared to start selling eggs next summer to help pay for their feed!

As for the candling, we do it every day. Mostly because I wanted this to be a learning experience for the family. And there is NO way I could stop myself!

I love the goat pics people are posting. So cute. I have 2 Nigerian Dwarf does. Ive been debating on mating one of them in a few months. Im still trying to figure out her cycle. They are both 9 months old. One is large(the one I plan to mate soon) she was a single, the other is a little smaller, she is petite, she was a twin and the mom herself was petite.
