5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Oh, automatic doors, that would be heavenly LOL - then again, I would miss saying goodnight to them all. So silly, I know.

Sometimes it's just impossible to be home by dusk.
It would also help get them out early but not too early.
The doors I'm working on is the breeder setup with 10 popdoors. 2 for each unit.

It is great to have you hatching with us!

We have Random post contest running now......

I culled my 60 eggs last night, official count is 5 that took. I guess I am out of the running for best hatch rate. O well at least a friend gave me a dozen eggs from his mixed flock and I'll set them tonight.

I asked Santa for a auto door but he told me it was silly and not a "fun" present. He obviously doesn't understand the meaning of fun.

Our Brahma trots after us like a puppy. Eats delicately from our hands and lets the littles haul him around like a cat. He's too big to fly and flap, that helps too.

And Old Blood line, Standard Bred, Heritage RIR Roosters have been like big old puppy dogs too.

Oh hooray! We have some EOB Cockerels, glad to know they are good adults! We sure like how nosey the breed is. They are always right around the feet. Can actually be a little hazardous!

CC totally understand not being home by dusk, especially this time of year. Last year when DH was still working, the flock was confined to their chain link run unless we were home. This year, he is retired, so I have been very fortunate the nights I get home late that he's been there to check on everyone, collect treat dishes, make sure the waterers are plugged in and the doors are closed and latched. I opted to change my hours instead of my clock when we "fell back" to standard time, so I leave for work at 5:15. I used to go out and open everything up, and one morning he asked why. I told him it was so he didn't have to do it, and he said, "Well you're letting all the cold air into their nice warm coops! I'll open the doors when the sun comes up, you just go to work." LOL I guess I'll keep him :)

Sorry about your hatch progress.. I was really excited about having a very good hatch this time. Bought all the extras, and additional effort making sure everything was perfect, and to this point only at about 60% (granted only 12 eggs to start with)

Quote: I know that this is very much debated, but I flat out dump poison down the tunnels. I make sure NONE is within reach of the chickens. You do have to thoroughly search for dead rats so the chickens don't get to them too. I was horribly worried about the rats coming into my house, so I was willing to risk it. I kept filling the tunnels with dirt, and when they stopped clearing out the entrance I knew they were gone. I've had to do this twice in the past 3 years, and no problems so far.
