5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

hey Ron i have a question, how are the genesis 1588s?? ive heard alot of good things about them. what are normally your hatch rates on them and is the digital thermostat and hygrometer reliable?? im looking to get a set from GQF. it comes with the 1588, an egg turner, and 30 bobwhite quail eggs. for $204 do u think its worth it?
I also have 2 hova bator 1588. One for incubating one for hatching. LOVE THEM!!! They are extremely reliable. And with the automatic egg turner its pretty much set it and forget it. Minus the gazillion times you will candle lol.

What kind of incubator is everyone using, just for interest's sake?

I have an LG. Generally do very well with unshipped eggs (90-100%), terrible with shipped eggs (0 to 25%).

I'm just using my brinsea mini incubator for winter hatches. I don't want too many chicks. But I also have an rcom 20 pro. I love both rcoms and brinseas! I've also used a genesis in the past, it worked great too.

okay sounds great! i just wanted to make sure because $204 is a good amount of money to spend on something that wont work! i have a question. why spend the extra money to buy another 1588 just to hatch when it only takes like 3 days in lockdown??

I knew if I started reading this thread, I'd get sucked in. Please add me to the crazy list.:ya
This will be my third NYDH and I look forward to the fun that always happens. My flock is primarily for eggs, so I have a mix of breeds to get pretty color eggs.
I only have 1 Marans hen, so I'd like to find some Marans or other dark egg layer eggs to hatch.

The Genesis is very nice. I have had great hatches in mine.

I hatch for other people. I am helping a local breeder improve SG Dorkings. Last year I hatched for her and for a local egg farm in exchange for keeping my Roosters at his place. Using the Brinsea, and one of the Genesis 1588 incubators, I can use the other 1588 for hatching and stagger the thatches. I can hatch a lot of chicks that way.

For hatching I could use a still air incubator but I already have the Genesis incubators so I am using them.

In a year or so I will probably need to get a cabinet incubator though. I need to start saving up now....

I started with one and loved it. My very first hatch was extremely stress free and I had such a good hatch rate. A few months down the road I wanted to start hatching more eggs more often so I mentioned it to my DH I wanted a 2nd incubator. So He bought me a Tractor Supply little giant still air. I had a very hard time with it I had to put a thermometer inside it and hope it was accurate and the tempt fluctuated a bit also it made me nervous. I also didn't like how the LG had the metal heat ring on the lid of the incubator exposed, it gets hot. I was nervous a chick or poult would burn its tiny head.

Im happy with my decision to get the 2 1588s. One day I might even get a 3rd lol. I think I might need a cabinet incubator

Staggered hatches. I have two Farm Innovators 4200 with auto turners and fans and a 1588 that does have a turner but I use it as a hatcher. My dream is cabinet units but that's a long way down the road, this year I would like to get the Brinsea Ron has, I have heard great things about it. Anyway, by using one strictly as a hatcher, the incubators stay cleaner and I can set as many eggs as I want each week - usually can't fill an incubator - then the next week set more, etc. - when time to hatch I move the eggs that are due to the 1588, and if I've behaved and waited a week to set the next group of eggs there's time for all to hatch and fluff and move to the brooder, clean and disinfect the hatcher and let it dry. Unfortunately I seem to have breached the seal between the display and the outside layer of plastic, I can't see the display now, but I always use a thermometer/hygrometer on the bottom where the eggs actually are.
