hmmmm.....the kitty scooper sounds good. also, the chickens could use the sand as a grit...correct?

is it ok for chicks to be in sand?

agreed. I will do that too. I thought I knew most....there are still a few breeds missing though, like jap bantams, or JB

so once you do that did you use a heat lamp?

Sand should be fine for them if its clean. Can use as grit i would still do paper towls for a day or two till they lean what is food.

I only put a boarder around the bottom about 6 inches or so. Also i tried to have the door by edge of table so cat couldnt stand on anything to get paws in. I used a heat lamp angled through front door. This was a plastic pet port with wire front door. My cat one i cut top off and made a lid of 2x2s and hardware cloth.

Okay, since we are talking brooder's I have to show mine off.The original idea was to build a simple box. This is in my computer room on an island we got as a tear out from a job DH was working on (the storage under is great). The lid is just screened and hinged. He built a removable divider because with different age groups it can be necessary. But, my favorite feature is the plexiglass viewing window. I pull up a chair and sit sipping coffee watching chicks in the morning....very peaceful. I love that we painted it so it wasn't an eyesore, as it is a permanent fixture in our house (I swear I'm not a hatching addict

). Drawback: My computer room does get mighty dusty.

A divider? Awesome idea! I will have to steal that idea.
