5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Lockdown tomorrow.... well that is if the ONE single egg left that had good veining in it of day 14 still looks good.

I have one egg I can't see into clearly and it doesn't stink so it is going too. I am going to candle my other 8 today to see how many of them are showing good signs, then lockdown for them is Tuesday. Praying for 4 but atleast 2!

Me too. I am going to get the kitchen liner in tonight...I have kept the humidity up to the mid 40's yesterday, and will today. Then up to the low 60's tomorrow. I don't have a problem getting humidity up with using my long wet cloths..I put them under the air places, use a straw and a syringe to add water when needed to keep it up there. Come on babies!

I'm not sure if anyone answered you specifically yet, have you compared to the picture Ron has posted on Page 1? I'm definitely not the one to be giving help regarding humidity as it seems to be my greatest enemy.

Two of the chicks hatched, I helped both.

They are fussing away, I'm waiting for them to dry off (I took the one out and scrubbed him down, that egg goo is like Super Glue!) I used dish detergent and warm water, I want him to dry a bit before I move them over to the brooder. and I'm calling him a 'him' as he's already got a comb that just won't quit.

Good job!!

A couple things I recommend if you can do so is to have electric at the coop and water nearby.
Having good access to the roosts whether a walk-in coop or an access door at roost height makes it very easy to handle the birds at night no matter how flighty they are. I hate chasing chickens, it's like herding cats.

yeah I made that mistake with the placement of my first coop, not fun carrying buckets of water down a hill after an ice storm. this one will be right next to the.house with electric and plumbing lol. and yeah my chickens got out this morning and it was a joke trying to get them back in especially because they kept getting "stuck" under bushes lol

I hope they make it!

Ron you give me hope. I've had several saddle air sacs in the past. Some have made it, some have not. I will be watching these eggs like a hawk, peeking into that window with the flash light, on top of the egg, cranking my neck around to see if I can see under the side of an egg..lol..and of course, listening, listening..listening. If I hear something, but don't see the pip, in I go after a half a day of hearing peeping.
Do you know how DMRippy bred these by chance? I have reading up on them, and see that there are a couple of different ways now. They are supposed to be pretty rare if bred the way the English did. Can't remember the name of the chicken they used. But rare. I guess I could try and see if I can find a site of his on them.

out of curiosity does anyone know how to tell if a dark shelled egg quit growing? I had a white egg quit and now it's glowing like a clear. will my olive eggs do something similar? I have 4 that I can't see anything but air cell. also a few of my eggs are a bit dirty :( is it to late to do anything about it? all of the eggs i can see into have veins and dark blobs. that's good right? I'm getting nervous now

You have a great boyfriend!

My Birthday is January 8th.

Ok now I have a picture in my head of showing up at your house with one of those HUGE packages of maxi pads from the 1970s that were the size of Costco toilet paper package and yelling HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I should tell your dd!

Man this little giant is touchy. I barely move the setting knob and bam it goes from 104 to 87-90. Wife is sitting there and I think by buying this I may have sold her on another 200+ incubator come tax season lol. She is talking about we need to return this thing.  I feel a sportsman coming my way
Mwahaha push for a dicky!

Since we get a lot of traffic here was wondering if some could answer me a question about fermented feed.

I buy feed from local feed mill last batch of fermented feed I did was 14% protein layer and scratch no problem with it. This time I got 20% and scratch since they slowed laying down and have some younger chickens in there now. The problem is I have a rotten egg smell on like day three. I started with clean buckets and water with acv w/mother.

What could they have added to make smell bad or do I have bad feed?

I have nothing to add but I have seen a lot of botulism this winter. Watch everyone like a hawk if it smells funny.
"I hate chasing chickens, it's like herding cats."

AIn't it the truth! We tried a wine called Herding Cats a couple of years ago, it was very good, nothing like its name LOL.

I have a bottle called kitten with a whip! I have to keep the last bottle just for the name.

I missed quoting that awesome warterer. That is perfect for quail. Even buttons could not drown in thst!

Like Chickencanoe said, there is nothing to do now but

,

If they do not hatch you can open them up and see where they quit. Use the hatch diagnostic pdf on the first page to help with the next hatch.

I stayed up late last night and put mine in lockdown. I have been lazy.....or confident.........but I have not even candled them since setting. I did candle before moving them to the hatcher from the Sportsman and tossed one clear. They all have good air cells, although they may be a bit large. They were in the trays sitting with the large end up, but one is huge and more on the side. I would call it a saddle, but it is oval and the eggs are all from my own birds (not shipped.)

I set on the 8th instead of the 11th, so mine should be hatching Sunday. Wish me luck! Oh, and I will be setting more eggs in their place in the incubator tonight. I'm hooked...........
