The neighboring egg has pipped, just dented out/cracked, the shell wasn't pushed open. Still no more progress on #1... but he has a little slit in the membrane, so he's got air. Time to go to bed!

If I knew what was going to happen, it wouldn't be an experiment, would it?

Every step here is uncharted territory AFAIK, which is what makes it interesting to me. I'm not very good at accepting "it can't be done"; and since i have the ability to test it, I just have to!
So far I know that they can maintain a healthy weight without having to be starved/rationed, they begin laying at about the same age as I'd expect for a bird of their weight, can breed naturally and produce fertile eggs. If those eggs can hatch, will the progeny be healthy, what will they be like... these are still unknowns.

I have no intent of selling them regardless of the result; if they hatch & are healthy, the roos will become capons, the hens will be meat as well, just sooner. If they don't hatch/grow as healthy chicks, I'll order a couple hundred more in Feb, because I DO know that they can be healthy long enough and grow large enough to make stunning capons. (the roo is 23lbs live weight at 10 months, still healthy & quick - just not graceful, but he never was!)

I split an order with someone else early last year - I took all the hens and the three liveliest roos. At 10 weeks, I chose what I felt was the 'best' roo and four best hens and processed the rest. The hens averaged 5.1#, the two roos 6.3. The 'chosen' stayed free-range with the capons until 16 weeks, when I put them in a private apartment; initially I 'rationed' them a pound each of feed per day, but they never ate that much so I just keep the feeder full now - and four weeks later they began laying.

I suspect that most of my clear eggs were the same hen - there's one hen who does not accept the roos advances peacefully, and now he rarely approaches her. She also lays a double about twice a week. Dunno whats up with that, but I have an egg customer who loves them.

It's all about the experiment... what will be, will be. It may end in disappointment - but it won't be the first time, and as long as there's a plan B, I'm okay with that!
I think it's a good plan. I know my plans have continually evolved over the years.
Let me know how they work out.
Do you caponize yourself?

Yay!!...I heard chirping and tapping coming from my incubator!!! Now what? I need advice - I'm supposed to go out of town for about 12 hours tomorrow night. If I have chicks starting to hatch, do I still go? I don't have a lot of space in my incubator for a bunch to be running around.

Btw, I set my eggs on the 11th at 7:30pm. I think the tapping is coming from a Marans and the chirping is coming from somewhere else.
They'll be fine and spend most of their time sleeping. Enjoy the party.

Congratulations everyone with their rockers, pippers, zippers and hatchlings. I hatch under a broody so I never get to see any of this - I am so envious!!!
Mine hatched over a 2 day period - I sat watching chickie TV through the coop window for almost all the 2 days trying to get a glimpse of the chicks as they arrived. I am with the people with bruises on their knees from their elbows - mine too !!

Good luck everyone! And thank you all for sharing your experiences and knowledge for those of us just starting out on this obsession, I mean hobby!!
But aren't broody hens great? No worries about power outages, turning, humidity, et. al..
At least it isn't -30 C there.

Dad seems more excited than I do. Currently at 7 La Flèche and, I don't know, maybe 15 Buckeyes. And its not even hatch day.
Awesome. Two great breeds.

Knowing they are in there, chirping, but not pipping is agonizing! I keep imagining them shrinkwrapped or some other horrible thing, just desperately waiting for some help.

I am telling myself, "step away from the 'bator"

C'mon, chickies!

Sit on your hands - now.
Okay, (yet another) question. I was NOT expecting pips tonight so I didn't set up my brooder. Yeah, I know. I'm a slacker. But if by some chance one of them hatches tonight will it/they be okay til morning? All I have to do is set up the heat source.

I'm a slacker too. I'm not even close to have the outside brooding area ready. There's still 3 roosters in there. They may have to be in the basement a couple days.
It will be fine till morning.

We have a pip! I'm so excited.

Paranoid too. What do I do if the humidity goes down?
Use the big holes to get some water in there.

Update! we had EVERY SINGLE CHICK HATCH!!!
So excited, this is my first hatch from our "own" silkies. :-D
Pics tomorrow!!!

Amazing!!
What day and time did you set?

Wow.....I've been trying to follow this hatch-a-thon for awhile now and it seems so stressful. Just curious...haven't had a chance to read every post but, was anyone hatching duckys? Congrats on all the hard work (mentally) everyone has put into this Hatch-a-thon! Was thinking about giving this a go on the next one! HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone here on BYC! ♡

@chickencanoe my outdoor brooder was set up. But, surprisingly (not) I had a silkie go broody 8 days after I set eggs in the bator. The other hens were harassing her and I didn't have anywhere else to put her since I had another silkie brooding in an empty rabbit hutch. I'm going to be up to my ears in chicks! Bwahahaha!
