5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Happy New Year! I sure am enjoying all the new chicky pics :) Can you tell I'm living vicariously through you all today! I can't wait for spring!!! We got a nice 6" dumped on us last night. Snow is such a blessing. If I repeat that over and over will spring come sooner???

It was great! I was asleep for the others.
I recorded it hatching. Click the video link at the top right.
Awww I thought you seen them hatch because I seen you check them, then about 5 mins later the one on the right started zipping. They hatched at like 2:30 2:40 and 3:05 EST.

#47 after a 4hr post zip nap, has exited the shell - WE HAVE A HATCH!
MyCL Prince over mutt brown egg layer, very large egg, med size chick.

Now if some of those fancy shipped eggs my cousin gifted me would hatch it would be lovely....

PIP in the blue CL egg #15 is @ 12 hrs no progress

But #47 just found her voice and is singing to everyone to come out and play NOW NOW NOW!
so perhaps more will do so soon.

be careful with your heat here if you get the whole brooder at 95 it will be too hot for the chicks.  they need a spot to cool off and a spot to warm up . good luck and watch them grow :jumpy

I think with a small batch of chicks 50 or less the goal should always be 100% survival  .  wont always happen because of factors like vigor of the chicks one got crushed by the waterer falling one just doesn't do well and dies.  listen to them and they will tell you a lot ..distress cheeping usually means too hot too cold hungry thirsty???? but when you look in they are running in and out of the heat with happy chirps some sleeping .  some eating some drinking you have everything about right in their world.  :weee

A regular light is much better in a small brooder. If I just have a few chicks in a small space I use a 75 watt bulb in a drop light. A drop light has a shield so it blocks some of the light but not the heat.
The first time I was going to use a Rubbermaid tub. I hung a heat lamp over it, put the thermometer on the bottom and the thermometer exploded.
I was leaving on a trip and had a chicken sitter. He let the light get too low and the chicks baked and died.

Should be nearly 100% if they aren't genetically or nutritionally challenged. Check for pasted vent as well the first couple weeks, that will kill them.

this is all good info thanks! my brooder does have cool spots. ill watch closely for the first few days and make adjustments
