5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Nice! I bought a 17 lb local free range bird that goes in the brine today. I'm slow roasting that bird overnight. Next year...homegrown all the way!

And on a hatching note...my darn hens are yielding 2 eggs a day! At least 30 hens, and 2 eggs. Baking pies and bread for tomorrow has meant I ration eggs. Yes, it's the fact it is winter. I choose to not light my coops. But it's going to make getting enough eggs together to make hatching worthwhile a little difficult.

Good Morning everyone. I know its not egg hatching related but thought I would share. Today is my Thanksgiving and I am up prepping for our dinner. My Family always celebrates a day early to make sure our family is all together and Thursday is for us all to go to our in-laws houses. Today we are feeding a family or 19 and on the menu is a 37lb whopper I raised myself. I may post pics after it is done cooking.
Beautiful!

Looks like you're only a hope n a skip from me, I should have some OE eggs available, I'm far southeast in PA, but am meeting up with GardeninMama, I think she's further west, we could do an 'egg train' :D

I am in Mt. Airy. Thanks for the offer, but I should have some eggs, kwim. I'll make my family stop eating eggs around December 3 and save up whatever I get between then and the set day.

There was someone else looking for eggs in this area. I'll have to look back and see who it was.

I am willing to help move some eggs along to people if needed. I travel a goodly portion of MD several times a week between my eldest son's swimming, work and just general out and about-ness.

.

That was me. We were talking on a PM about it and I twice replied to your last message and just looked and twice BYC has eaten my reply. :(

I said it would be great if we could meet in Frederick Tuesday the 10th. If you have any to spare. If not, no biggie. I am getting some from someone else, but would like another 1/2 dz to fill my bator!

We are getting hammered with snow. Awwww. Glad I bought a new vehicle in September

lucky u its flooding in Tennessee may have a couple inches in the morning tho

I looked at the day outlook for Knoxville and it looks like 50's for show day. Yay
On a nice note all three if my mottled Cochins are internally pipped, hoping to have 3 cute babies when I get home

Okay. Again, you've got several days more! Let the 'bator run for several hours dry and see then. If that is too low, maybe a very SMALL cut of a sponge filled with water and see how that goes. Or here's an idea. Get some grocery store eggs and put them in there at room temp, and let it run for a while. See if the moisture coming out of the eggs keeps the humidity proper?
I am stressing because I have never ran this incubator before and I don't want to have eggs and still not have things right. I have one success to report, I found out that the place I usually incubate is not going to work for this one. When I turn the oven on to bake dinner it raises the temperature enough to overheat. Who would have guessed.

So now I have moved the incubator and it has been running it all night without water. I got up this morning and the humidity was 20% and the temperature was perfect. So we are moving forward here.

I think once eggs are added this will be a purrfect humidity until we see how the eggs react and lose weight.
The sponge is a good idea and I can cut them however small I need! Thanks for everyone that helped!! I am starting to understand why everyone always says this is a place of great wonders. LOL
