5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

@bantambury I would keep her. Her crossbeak might not get any worse and may stay like that. Haha I'm biased because I love special needs birds <3 rehabilitating them and watching them grow up is incredible. If she get worse and you don't want to deal with her, you could always regime her to someone who already has special needs chickens. She could be a house hen if nothing else!

@bantambury what camera did you take such amazing pictures with? I need to try to get some good pics. they are awesome!

I used a Nikon D5200.

I HIGHLY recommend getting one. They take excellent photos, and are VERY clear. Definitely a great camera for beginners!

Here is a link with some info on it if interested:

Not too pricy compared to the more advanced cameras, but it is a lot.....a lot of times you can also find them on a good sale.

I love sharing my interests with my friends!
1)Chickens
2)Photography
Hope you get into it!

hope this helps!

im depressed about the slipped beaked chick......should I keep her?

I dot know what I would do with a special chicken if I have to end up deep feeding her....

Its up to you. If you let her grow a little you can gauge how bad the cross will be. If it is severe it will progressively get worse day by day literally. Only down fall on giving her more time is the attachment you will grow toward her and it may become harder for you to make the decision to cull. I will try to find pics of my crossbeak chick to show you the progression she had.

I cant find any more pics but hers got pretty bad, not to say your chick will. This chick sadly starved to death, I did everything I could do to feed her.

When you post a picture I will try hard not to look. They are too cute for me....

And 4 more pulled from the hatcher:
Well I'll have to add picture in a bit, having trouble with loading it. I'll try again tomorrow.

anyway:
I actually pulled 5 more from the hatcher:
1 Naked Neck
1 Blue Copper Marans
1 Light Brahma
2 Easter Egger, I had do cull 1 poor baby must have got stuck to the shell and struggled too hard to get loose, and ...........well I don't think I'll have to say anymore most of you know what happens when shells get stuck to their bottoms.

Totals are now @: 15 Naked Necks
8 Non-Naked Necks (crosses)
1 Light Brahma
1 Blue Copper Marans
21 Easter Egger (20 live).

And best thing off all is all but 10 have already sold.

Thanks for letting to rave about my hatch.

Is the beak getting worse? I thought I had one with cross beak but it worked out fine for her.

this was from today....

and yesterday:

I don't think it got any worse that I know of.....I haven't checked on the chicks enough to see her eat though.

@bantambury These pictures give you a good idea about the 'worse case' scenario. I would wait a week and see how thing look then. Her don't look that bad to me.

I got tired of checking 'bator so moved all that had hatched to brooder - plastic tub with light, hay on floor and water. Water leaked and was pooled in corners and near edges, so I moved the pipped eggs to brooder under the light and covered with the damp hay. 5:30 pm RIR emerged with a kick shell fell away and it was free. I got to watch close up

still trying to get pic's with pad I bought, should have got the dual camera instead of the keyboard.

4 more eggs under the hay, haven't checked the 'bator lately.
