5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Happy Thanksgiving to you guys over in the US

I envy you guys for having such a lovely tradition of spending a day with family to reflect on what you are thankful for. I'd love to do that one year, but over here it's not a custom... All the turkey pics looked stunningly delicious! I think I should travel to the US next year for Thanksgiving to go share in a beautiful tradition and try out those yummy looking turkeys!!

I am getting so excited I can hardly sit still! I'll probably jump awake at every little sound tonight and run to the incubator hoping to find

I will sort of be joining in - I have a dozen Araucana eggs on order for my broody Austalorp x Nell. They should be laid by Wednesday to go in overnight post and will hopefully arrive Thursday (5th December)
How long should I leave them to stabilise the air sacs before I put them under the chicken?

I was thinking to put them under her on the Friday 6th December - giving me a hatch date of 27/28 December.

This will be my first posted eggs hatch - feedback from other recipients suggests I can expect to hatch approx 8 out of the 12 - I'll keep my fingers crossed!
We are hatching the same day!!! My hubby works Christmas (airlines), so we moved Christmas to Friday, and my college daughter is coming for the weekend. So I want them to hatch 27/28th as well.

My 13yo dd and I are having fun researching the ins and outs of hatching. My hubby doesn't like birds, but he is pressuring me to hurry up because he wants more eggs. But I failed to teach him about chicken math. He thinks a dozen are going in the bator, but I am up to 30 now.

My Brinsea should be here any day, and I have eggs being shipped next Monday. 2/3 of the bator will be shipped eggs, and 1/3 will be 'insurance' eggs of our own mutts. I do NOT want to have a sad Christmas if the USPS is mean to my babies! I ordered some CCL/super blues, olives, Marans, and a few more EEs.

Add me into the list for the hatch along. Don't know what I am setting yet so I better start finding some eggs. I am shooting for 60 eggs this year.
Welcome!! 60 eggs!!! Nice.

Yes, a wonderful tradition….it confirms why I'm happy living a bit further away than we planned originally.

Count me in!
I am part way into my wine cooler - incubator project, so this will be good incentive to finish it and to a test run.

I'll be hatching from 2 pens of Olivers (Ameraucana roo + dark egg layers and BCM roo + Ameraucana hens), plus a few test hatches of my barnyard specials.
Welcome aboard the crazy train!

Ok...I'm stuffed! Think I ate almost half the bird by myself.
Wow! That was quite the table you had for 4!! I'm jealous, we ate at the in~laws and now have no left overs. The kids are insisting I roast a turkey this weekend…sounds good to me!!

Thanks.

They aren't actually due until tomorrow, so I know I probably won't actually see any action tonight, I'm just so eggcited I can't help but keep running to look in at them.

I'm silly that way. This is only my second ever hatch and my first ducks. They were shipped and I only got 3, but all three are alive and twitching around!

ETA - Of COURSE I'll post pics!

Well I checked the fertility on my two girls who are laying today when I used their eggs for the cornbread. They are Olivers. One lays olive the other brown (but extra large). So I suppose the brown is just an EE since she doesn't carry the blue. The olive egg was fertile. One of the browns were and one wasn't. I am going to collect some of these and try hatching. I may only set the olive eggs though. I am getting some button quail eggs to set.
