5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Has anyone ever found out the why of that particular ruling? I mean by definition they breed more true than blues. Seems like some a lame thing though since the Blue and Splash are the same gene just in single and double form.
Well, I thought that there were several breeds that allow splash but I looked through my standard and I didn't see a single one. However, I know that I have seen splash birds at shows... cochin bantams are definitely one I remember seeing. I'm trying to think of other breeds I've seen. Old English game bantams?

I think they should be allowed too, I have some exceptionally pretty splashed Andalusians.

Do you guys think it's necessary to put a heat pack in with shipped hatching eggs? Anyone have experience with receiving shipped eggs in winter, particular in the northern and colder states or you guys up in canada? I was offered a heat pack with my egg shipment. Not sure if it's necessary or if it's indeed worth it. Mine, in particular, are only being shipped from Ohio to Pennsylvania.
I am new to hatching and shipped eggs so I don't know for sure. But I would think that a heat pack wouldn't be such a good idea. As long as the eggs are kept coolish they don't begin developing yet. I would think that unless it is a very cool heat pack it might start incubating them itself and then they would cool when unpacked and rested and then heat back up when you put them in the bator.

Can you post a link to that CL draft standard? I know it is on here somewhere...but where...
I'm trying to figure out if this CL pair I have are any good. This pic was in Sept, I need new pics as they both have filled out and look much nicer now. (Ignore the SFH pullet w/ them, she is a hatch mate who 's new bf will be arriving next wk)

oh & the hatchery Del, "Ruby" ignore her too (she & 3 other old hens have been teaching CL jr Roo "Prince" to be charming. It is going very well, after 2 months of them pushing him off the top rung roost every night he now is very sweet , finds the girls treats, etc and they finally let him sleep on the top rung, all eggs started being 100% fertile after that, and he is still nice ;)

Gotta go shovel some pens & get things set for the new birds & hoped for NYDH babies!!!
Have a great day ya'll.

I would have to say if it was offered to take it, but then the other advice about how it might heat the eggs up to much makes too.

Might be a good thing to read about and do a little research.

Here's my silkie hen that went broody yesterday and she is now on 4 eggs even no it's November here in Ohio and snowy and cold I hope her chicks will do ok with her
She is the cutest and oh so fluffy. I cant wait to hatch some silkies. I hope she does a good job brooding for you. And I agree with the other poster that suggested it, you may want to move her to a warmer location like a garage or a basement maybe.

Having been watching this with showgirls a lot has to do with numbers. You need 25 birds to go to a qualifying meet and a chunk of change for a color to be accepted. I think splash is more unpredictable so it's harder to get qualifying numbers.

I have a new egg layer. My Olive Egger pullet has started a secret nest and I found 3 eggs today YAY!!!!!!!!!

Gorgeous!! I would definitely try to hatch them….are you worried that it's too early in the game to be collecting eggs? Set date is only 12 days away, so I think you'll be okay probably. Keep them in a cool room, and tilt them from time to time.

I see Splash Silkies being shown all the time… Just checked the SOP and Splash is not listed in the Color Descriptions at the front of the book….Although the heading was 'Common Color Descriptions', so who knows?

No my worry is that they are new pullet eggs. Even though they look quite biq.

Im wondering if she has more eggs out in her coop buried under the shavings... Hmmm... I think I will dig around her coop tomorrow and she wat I find. The above eggs unfortunately froze and cracked so they are trash. I plan to start collecting eggs mom for the hatch.
