5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Lol! I have an Olive Egger, and EE's that lay a pretty green, but no true blues yet.  My quest is for the elusive purple egg.... And yes, I pray they are all pullets!!

There are a few sources for croad langshans in the us. Chicken girl on the nor cal thread should have some by spring. She is a sweetheart!

My flock lays all of those colors if you need eggs. I even get the occasional pink or purple tinted egg.

Don't they have a lethal gene? Or a genetic defect that can cause them to die suddenly? I saw an auction on here for eggs, and that was a disclaimer.
Do you know where I can look at that ad or who posted that they have a lethal gene? I hatched 6 out of eight eggs and all of them survived and none were sick. I'm working with Kim (CatKai) and she hasn't had any either. Our biggest problem is the splash have brown leakage

I should finish reading all the posts before I post something, 5 pages behind, while shopping on Amazon, Thanks Ron for answering and everyone that jumped in since I was too busy spending money, instead of getting the oil changed like I was supposed to

Quote: I have 2 smooth hens in from different blood lines, trying to add new blood to them. I will take the splits and breed back to the father and hope for more Silkied Feathered. I hope you try them they are gorgeous.
I don't even know what I bought on Amazon this morning I'm was in some stupid zone, some of it went fast and now I'm trying to stay off it

What is a Barred Holland? I shall look them up. Also what is a BBR? It's the code my family uses when referring to the lone Brabanter at our house. I'm sure that's not correct though.
BBR = maybe Blue Barred Rocks

Ive never heard of a Holland chicken Im gonna look it up too.

Well, apparently Goliath was reading over my shoulder through the window or something (creeper chicken) and jumped the gun.

I heard a weird noise out in the pens, went to go see (we're having a wind storm, so figured maybe a limb or something fell...)

Goliath had led his minions (his hatchmates Ug Lee and Herald) out of the isolation pen and into the layer pen...and they were having their way with as many hens as they could in as short a time as they could.

Guess I'll check tomorrow to see if any are fertile. :p

Hmm well your boys sound like they were busy. Fresh boys sneaking in to visit the girls lol.

Im not sure if tomorrows eggs will show fertility though. I think it may take a little longer, like 3-7 days depending on the hen. I think most common is 3 days after the mating.

I have yet to see an actual plum or purple egg from the Langshans and ive got a bunch of them in both sizes from a variety of breeders. Two of my LF hens do produce eggs with purple spots though. Doesn't mean they're not out there somewhere, just not very common. Love the breed.
