5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I have two last minute questions!!

1) do I HAVE to sanitize my bator before this hatch< since its new and out of the box? or no?

and

2) the morning of the hatch can I set up my bator so its up an running, and just pop the eggs in, or should I sit the eggs in and start it up and let the eggs slowly get to 99.5?

thanks!

1. You do not have to sanitize but I would clean any way to remove any toxic chemicals that might be in it from manufacturing.

2. Set up the incubator now and run it--It is best to have them running for 24 hours before setting the eggs. Get it stable for Temperature and humidity. Make sure the eggs are room temperature an then put them into the incubator at the set time for our hatch(or as close as possible). Let the incubator run for 24 hours before making any adjustments and wait and hour or so between adjustments.

Happy Hatching!

Did you pay 4$ an egg? My Pet Chicken is a middle man for Meyer Hatchery here in Ohio. I tried getting broiler eggs from them and they told me 4$ an egg I passed since the chicks were cheaper

About that but because they can't fill my order will double it in spring for no extra cost... But I think I will stick with local after that

Here is a sneak peek of my babies...set to hatch December 27/28 (our Christmas)! I had them in the black tray with rails, but it was bothering me that every time we turned them a few on top would make little clunking sounds (and only my little CCLs fit up top laying down, which were shipped, so I was worried they were too fragile for that). So tonite I took out the tray and have them all completely big end up...and now I can sleep better.

AND I couldn't help but to candle 3 of the white CCLs and there are VEINS!

I wasn't expecting that...I only put them in Friday night. I am surprised because my shipping box looked like it had been dropped on two corners...so if these little ones make it it is only because the egg-stra-ordinary DMRippy used that sticky bubble wrap for them! It took me and dh 20 minutes, two knives, and scissors to get them free!

I have a question, though...since I was moving them around tonite, should I let them sit flat for the next 12 hours or should I give dh the go ahead to turn them when he gets home from work?

It depends on what the air cells were like. If they were looking good, then you can start turning them.

One seemed to be moving around quite a bit. One just barely. And one didn't move.

My gut is telling me to leave them alone. But this is my first hatch, so not sure why I have *any* gut feeling about this process...but it serves me well in my job and as a parent. So I think I will listen to it!

Thanks!

Turn it on and calibrate it now to catch any snaffus

Ya I'd leave them for a while. Better to let the cells mend. Good gut feeling cookies for you.

If you're getting them from DMdrippy, have no fear, those eggs are wrapped TIGHT, I got my Rhodebars from her and broke one myself just trying to unwrap the un naturally strong bubble wrap. I should have taken pics...

You got yours?  Mine haven't come yet..thought they would today.  :(

Mine came, but only because they were mailed out before the storm (Dec 2nd), we are hatching in between Christmas and New Years so we can be here for the hatch.

My SFH eggs are delayed too. Or lost... They shipped out early Friday, and haven't scanned anywhere since they left the sort facility.

I even went to PO and had them look it up and they show no scans either. Hopefully someone just missed scanning them and they'll be here tomorrow. I will be picking up my Lav Orp eggs tomorrow though (barring any problems arising), AND one of my EEs started laying again finally (they've been having a rough first molt). So I have 2 pretty blue/green eggs to put in as well.
I like having a few eggs from my own coop in there too, it helps me better monitor my hatch rate.

I will be one of the late ones I am afraid. My eggs shipped out Saturday and still haven't arrived. We can't even get out of the driveway because of all the ice, and more is forecasted tonight. Heres to hoping I get them tommorrow.

and that we keep electricity tonight lol

WOW, a LOT of eggs are coming in late…wish you all luck. I LOVE the idea of the 'better late than never' hatch buddies!
Not hatching related but I thought it was cute

I took a few random pics of my chickens and thought I would share my pics that show a story of 2 love birds,
1 shy rooster and 1 very persuasive hen

AWWWW SWEET LOVE

ADORABLE! and an awesome coop BTW

YES! That bubble wrap was like CEMENT! lol I set Friday? maybe Saturday (I really should write these things down)… and have not turned my turner on yet..waiting for my gut to tell me to

Two of my three 'tester' eggs were clear. The other is porous so I can't tell what's going on inside it. Looks like I may be seeing something in it but maybe not. I'll have to wait longer to see if a chick ends up in it! Hopefully that since the obvious infertile ones were the first eggs they had layed in a while maybe the ones I will set tomorrow will be fertile
fl.gif
. The maybe fertile one came from a different pen than my two clear eggs.

I don't think will clean my bator......its been set up since last week and the temp was perf. so think I may just be fine this ONE time.....
