5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Oh, it turns out my Silkie, Blossom wasn't broody after all... She was just sleeping on the nest Boooo

They do that! It is hard to tell a silkie pile to keep warm from a silkie pile to keep an egg warm.

OMG that was a lot of posts. I missed many because the site took me to the end when my phone went offline.

I'm excited the hatch has started!

I too have an infrared temp gage (right now it is mostly being used as a lazer pointer to show off foster kittens) I was wondering about using on eggs.

What temperature are they supposed to be?

Quote: My incubator went way up like that a few hatches ago. Didn't hurt the eggs though! I thought for sure they would be dead! My incubator is still air but I haven't had any problems though...except of course most of the pre-incubated bantam Cochin eggs that were scrambled by the wonderful USPS people! Eleven hatched out of 26 so I am thankful I got even that many!.

Ok! Here we go! Yesterday at 9:00 AM MST I set 7 eggs:

2 Marans
2 Second generation Olive Eggers
3 Silver Laced Wyandotte over an Easter Egger

I'm not sure if the SLW/EE eggs are fertile... what do you think? Sorry for the poor pictures.

OK...I placed 10 standard eggs in my incubator last night. The roo is a Salmon Faverolles and I have several different breeds of hens.

There are also bantam Cochin eggs in there that are due to hatch in 2 days. I just received an egg turner for my incubator and plan to add it today.
I plan to add hopefully 2-3 Salmon Faverolles eggs in the next few days but they won't count here. I really like my Faverolles but I only have the one pair so I would hope to get at least another pullet...and there is always the chance that there will be a couple in the eggs I just set. I don't know which hens these are from except the whites which came from my 1 white Leghorn hen.
I separated out my Faverolles hen from the others so I would know her eggs would be purebred.

I was just looking over page 1 and did I really miss the guess how many eggs will be set contest?? That really stinks!! I wanted a shot at those Pendescas!

The eggs should read 99.5.

You need to make sure that you get one hat is accurate to tenths of a degree. +-3 degrees is pretty worthless.

Ive cracked eggs open before for breakfast to only happen to notice the bullseye and literally go "oh no" and try to think of a way to put it back in the shell and glue it up

I don't know why that happens because ALL of my eggs are ALWAYS fertile lol its nothing that I didn't know before I cracked the egg. The feeling just sneaks up on me occasionally

I guess we do need breakfast sometimes...

Haha! Well, right now the roo is only with two girls... and he has his favorite! And it's not the EE! We've never seen him pay any attention to her at all. So, I decided to take one of the eggs that was the coldest upon collection to test fertility. Good to know that he's at least gotten her once! :) Plus... I have a Brinsea mini. Any more than seven eggs might put my DW through the roof :) Thus many of omy eggs turn into breakfast :)

I set 31 eggs yesterday. 14 Easter Eggers and 17 pure blue wheaten Ameraucana. I watched my mail lady turn the box upside down and sideways trying to scan it for delivery so I hope they aren't too scrambled! I pointed out the arrows and "FRAGILE LIVE EMBRYOS" written all over the box.... She apologized.

I'm hatching bob white quail! You should try to hatch some!!! You can get some good eggs at GQF.com 8 bobwhite eggs for 12.00 free ship! Hope it helps! Good luck!
Happy hatching
