5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I hope you do too! What breeds are you crossing?
I have a Splash Ameraucana roo over FBCM hens. I have 2 of those eggs in the bator.

Chickee
He is from cheep chicks farms, hatching eggs, I hatched him. He got best of breed and best of variety in the Virginia poultry breeders association show a few weeks ago.
No eggs from him this time, the girls have just finished molting and not laying until the days start to get longer. They are on strike. I have a few of his chicks in the brooder from a few weeks ago.
I keep telling all my chickens that are on strike that I as there feeder am going to go on strike if they don't start laying soon.

They just give me that look...

He is very nice, so I can see why he did well at the show

So I feel your pain!

Already Pm's this to Ron,

But to be clear, my eggs I numbered when I was unpacking/letting them rest and between the
dogs, the cats, the DH & the phone lets just say the numbers I wrote on them in pencil were a little off.

So I mostly fixed that when I set, except I skipped # 37, so here I wrote the # they say, which less #37 = 49 eggs set, really.
& Ya'll thought you had chicken math down pat didn't you ;P

Perhaps my new nickname is #37...or maybe that just means I get to set 37 more eggs later on...

So cute! Congrats!

This is my F1 Olive Egger she is a cross of blue egg laying EE and BCM roo.

and her olive eggs

I have 3 of her eggs in the incubator for the NYDH that will be F2 chicks. She was crossed back to a BCM rooster.
She is lovely and so are those eggs!

Ok now this is where it gets confusing and i think hatcheries have a hand in it. They sum up any blue-green egg layer as an EE. But an EE is an f1 cross, of pure blue gene bird and any other color examples would be like ameraucana crossed with leg horn or cream legbar crossed with bcm's. So if your crossing an EE f1 with bcm would make the F2 you have there then you crossed the F2 with bcm again making an F3 olive egger.

Now if your calling your pure ameraucana an ee then yes that bird you have would be an F1 OE.

This is the way it was explained to me as EE's are mutts/crosses and don't breed true to standard.

The easiest way to make it clear when you are looking for purebreds is to ask for show stock. If it is a mixed color flock of Ameraucanas the offspring will not be showable because their color genes will be mixed up. Some people who don't show may not realize that that makes a difference. Some of us on the Ameraucana thread were arguing for the distinction between between mixed colored Ameraucana EE's and EE's that have brown egg genes. If you are wanting to develop an new color you would want to draw from Am EE's instead of EE's that have the brown egg genes. It is very confusing for most people. That little bit of spelling difference means so much.
Now that's why i call any pure breed not an EE. I know there are project birds that they are working on getting them to breed true over and over to get them a standard and those once they breed true and blue eggs wouldn't be ee's any more but a different color of what ever breed they are trying to get the color added to that standard.

Now what i find weird is that you can have two colors that breed true but you cross them and they no longer breed true and become ee's. Like mixing silver ameraucana and a bbs one the off spring wont breed true from what I'm told. I've yet to try cause my silver girl aint laying yet. So this i will be testing.
