smell usually starts as an "eggy" smell and gets more rotten the longer it sits. Good eggs=no smell. Bad eggs=eggy or foul smell.
Stay away from blue, too, then lol. You'd think blue, being a light color, would be easy to see through but gosh darnit, I've had better luck seeing into black eggs than blue.

Black eggs??? What breed lays black eggs? I've seen blue, green, olive chocolate, and even lavender but not black. I must have that one.

Also I saw the chart on blue eggs crossed with brown but what do you get if you are crossing white into blue or olive laying hens? Does it lighten future generations?

I'm north central about 45 min for Akron
Will pm you what variety did they give you. I have new birds now. Working at getting size smaller. At the show we had a dUccle club meet and were discussing the size of the birds and how they were getting bigger and bigger. One of the breeders said it was due to the amount if protein we are feeding them, said that they need a lower protein and a change in what we feed the chicks. He has been getting smaller birds by hatching in winter and late spring and feeding the chicks fine screened corn and adults either hay or grass and scratch which is what I just started doing. Will see what happens with the first batch I hatch this winter. Can you send me pics if the cockerels
Mille fleur looks like, although she said one split to porcelain and the other split to mottled maybe? Heatherscooby on here had them. She gave tthem to me because she only had those 2 boys, no pullets. Will work on pics.

yes! The eggs go into the plastic veggie tubs and stay in to fluff after they hatch. I then take out the tub and band the chicks. I used little zip ties. I was hatching for individual matings--part of a breeding program to improve SG Dorkings.

I am doing my part to help rescue an endangered breed--Working with a local breeder.
Kudos on working with the dorkings!!! I have just started with them too. Have some chicks pipping now off my red pyle pair!! Can't wait to see them!

Okay, did that, tried to upload a pic and got this message: "AJAX response unable to be parsed as valid JSON object."
What the heck does that mean?

It looks like that is a database error--What file format was the picture? Did you make if smaller? I make mine 1024x768 10 quality jpg files.

Report the error to the Administrators.

I have been hatching chicks for capayvalleychick for three years now. We shared a McMurray order too.

I think her SG Dorkings are very nice. They are likely one of the best flocks in the US at this time. I do not think she gets enough credit for what she has done and her methods of getting there. Of course she is very modest.

Hint: Pay attention to what she posts on the Dorking thread.

I am off to a Christmas Program.

I will total the eggs set when I get back. I should be able to announce the winner this evening. I am in Pacific time.

Ron, I filled in the survey even though I didn't set eggs for this hatch. I just hatched a bunch of chicks in the past month & almost always have at least 1 bator running. Just couldn't swing it right now with the move. My last batch of chicks hatched less than a week ago while I was moving. As soon as I find space for the bator & the girls get back to laying I'll be back to hatching.
