5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

That is not a bad idea. Oddly, we could have more hatch because the final hatch will include Quail. Also, a lot of folks did not post what they set for the Hatch a long.

I do have one more egg donation....I might set up a survey to figure out what the last contest will be?

Thee is a setting under your profile to turn off ads. It will make BYC work faster if you have slow internet too.

Yea that sounds like a good idea

And even a more positive note.... the 2 clears are 2 that they girls have NOT named. LOL So they picked well.

We even saw the small embryo in the one!- Awww! My 4 year old started talking to it!! I am not going to discourage her, might help her grow.

That is great!

quick question guys. say i set 10 eggs in an incubator... and 2 end up being not fertile... and the other 8 hatch. would that be a 100% hatch rate or 80%? i want to know if un fertilized eggs count towards your hatch rate

I personally count the unfertilized eggs towards my hatch rate. Not sure if you're suppose to. I think most do.
There are two types of hatch rate- Total hatch rate and fertile hatch rate.

The ones that make it to lockdown are used for fertile hatch rate. Total hatch rate is the the average of all eggs set that hatch.

You really need to be careful when buying eggs. Total hatch rate may be 30% while fertile hatch rate may be 90%. I would not want eggs from someone that has eggs like that.

Well. Let me just say THIS------>

Day 8, first cull. There were two clear eggs yesterday. One fell out of the bator as soon as I opened it tonite and culled itself (not fertilized). The second clear one now has small veins and a tiny embryo in it...really slow grower. We were able to see inside all but one of the Marans...and they are growing. Most of them were extremely active! Oh, and one has a sideways air cell.

Of 32 eggs (21 shipped in a damaged box)...I have a grand total of 29 that are alive and well. My 'plan' was for ~16 to actually hatch and then I would end up with a second flock of ~8 hens and a roo (plus some roos to feed until freezer camp). This was not how I expected chicken math to work!

What have I DONE? What will I do with this many chickens??? I'm not SUPPOSED to have this many doing well! It's my first hatch!

Wish I could send some to you fellow hatchers that don't have any...or as many as you want!!! Maybe I should start researching how to ship brand new chicks, LOL!

Now a question about the sideways air cell. It is right smack in the center of the egg between the big and small ends, up against the side. There is veining and an embryo. I am assuming there is no way the chick can be situated at lockdown so that it would be able to make an internal pip, right? Should I cull it now? I don't mind as I have too many, but if there is a chance...I don't want to mess with it.

Ron, we need a new smiley on here...one sitting amongst bags of chicken feed with an empty wallet.

I like the idea for that smiley!!

I have two questions:
I still haven't added any water for humidity, I set on the 11th and humidity is between 25% and 33%. Is that okay? The kettle is close the the incubator, when we boil it the humidity climbs just a tad. I'm attempting dry incubation since my previous hatch was a disaster, all embryos developed but only 1 hatched, the rest died between day 10 and hatch time

I turn manually 3 times a day: 07:00, 15:00 and 23:00 - That's exactly 8 hours apart each time. Will that work?
Sounds like a great turn schedule to me!

The rule I go by: if it doesn't stink, it stays.
Me too!

I guess I have 3 leghorns and didnt know it, I just thought they were little white mutts... lol ( nothing wrong with mutts) but the eggs are tiny, I want to add white eggs to my basket but I want lg. ??? will look and try to find them in the breeds section. Thanks for all the info. Was looking at the white jersey giants and they lay awesome brn eggs, just afraid they would squish my other hens..lol

Leghorn should lay large white eggs. That looks like a bitty bantam egg!

I don't get any pop ups at all on this site. The top right corner is an add but that stays there when I scroll down I have blue to the sides of my main area. I guess there is advertisement at the bottom of the page also.
I don't have popups either. Just some adds along the right side that I hardly ever even notice. Of course, I use my laptop to browse here not a phone, so maybe it works differently.

I take it your talking about for the contest. I would say it would be 80% since we are counting our eggs and taking pics for our count before we can tell if we have any development.

Which type will be used to judge the hatch rate contest? I'm guessing total hatch rate?

my phone I noticed lately when I go to scroll down a pop up shows at the bottom but once it stops scrolling it lowers down and I don't see it again till I scroll it. That is annoying as heck cause it also makes it hard to see where I'm at when scrolling and seems to slow my scrolling down a lot.

I've got 7 duck eggs in the Brinsea mini and they look perfect when candled at 4 days... great veining. I've got 5 eggs I. The Little Giant from the same batch of eggs and nothing.. WTH?

Impressed with the Brinsea, but ****** off with the LG.

Yes, It is in the announcement. It is too hard to keep track of fertile hatch rate for contests.

Try to get both hatch rates out of a seller.
