5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

So dh figured out why all my $$ is supporting the feed store each month. He was out sighting his new BB gun and heard the chickens squawking loudly...so went to have a look and not only are there wild birds, but ground squirrels.

I just bought 25x50' nylon aviary netting and was up and down the ladder what seemed like a hundred times Sunday to hang around the edges of our 3 stall covered horse coop. I have it 3/4 done...now I just need to attach the second 25x50' net to the front end and have it go down over the run/paddock. I wrongly thought it was BIRDS stealing all the food. At least he took out the two invaders, but I am sure they have friends.

So I am off to browse the forums again to figure out what to do.

I candled again last night, mostly just 3 that we put question marks on. There is minimal movement and shadows but I think the embryos may be under the air sacs making it difficult to see. The others are so BIG now!

Is anyone hatching extra Cream legbar chicks? I had 1 female and 1 male from some eggs I got on ebay. They were just over 10 weeks old. But the female did not survive the night last night. I'm thinking either heart failure or failure to thrive.

It might be worth investing or making a squirrel rat proof feeder. The chickens have to step on a bar to raise lid to get to the feed. Smaller Animals can't work the mechanism. Treadle animal feeder

Im right there with ya. I have noticed the feed has been going awful quickly also. I finally figured it out when the snow came, rodent tracks all over the place TONS of them. I now see paths that look like roadways and tunnel systems AGH

. Im not quite sure how to handle it. I lock the feed up in the coops at night with the chickens but it doesn't seem to help.

The Survey says @CackleJoy and @roostereggs are hatching Cream Legbars and will be available after hatching.

Oh, and I have to keep from pulling my hair out because my father in law wants to give me "advice" on my chickens. Ugh. Anyone want a free father in law? He's house broken and everything!

I thought that the "failure to thrive" losses usually happened in the first week or two. Can it still happen when they are that old?

I had to stop free feeding mine. I was feeding the neighborhood cats! Don't know why they are so attracted to chicken feed but they are. My dogs go batty for it too.

This is why I have cats & store my feed in steel barrels with clamp on lids. My cats won't touch my birds but anything that scurries or slithers is fair game.

My cats like the bird food too. That's why all of my feeding is done in covered runs & pens...lol
