5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I let a fellow chicken farmer barrow a rooster for a month to fertilize his hens. Does that count as a play date? My rooster thinks it did, I know because he said " cock a doodle doooooooooooooooo"

hahaha i had brought my roo in to tend to his comb and he pooped on the floor so i said to my roo"colonel dipper its not polite to doo doo in the housse" and my hubby in a rooster crow voice said "A cock will do a doo doo"

i think im turning my hubby into a crazy chicken lady too LMBO

My cats like the bird food too. That's why all of my feeding is done in covered runs & pens...lol
Well, my runs are covered, but my chickens free range all day long so the gate is open for them to come and go to the nest boxes.

I think there was a cutoff, I missed it too. But I am still enjoying following along with the others.
I don't think there is a cutoff for joining in with the hatchalong. There was just a cutoff for one of the contests.

Candled last night. 5/7 were surely developing... 1 was "culled"... and 1 is iffy. :) Not too bad.
Nice! I'll be candling mine tonight and mark day 7 air cells and compare to the chart to see if my humidity needs any adjusting.

My one little lady turns 7 today and I have school Christmas programs, so today is a happy busy day! Hope everyone has a good one.

Well I candled today. I had dipped my eggs in 5% vinegar before placing in the bator. On about half of the brown eggs it rinsed a lot of the deep brown off. I was able to get them to glow enough to make our air sacks but I couldn't see any thing else. The olive eggs were quite impossible even though they had been dipped too. I tried one or two of the quail eggs but they are too dark as well.

I weighed all the chicken eggs and about 3 of the quail eggs. The quails have lost a gram a piece and the chicken eggs have lost between 1 and 3 grams. I have got to add more water. I am struggling to keep my humidity over 10%. On the good side my temps are holding well.

I saw something today in a new seed catalog I got. It has electric heating mats to help germinate seeds. You apparently put it under the tray of plastic pots and it warms the soil so thing sprout. Made me wonder if it would work keeping chicks warm.

Quail eggs will shine blueish on the top if they Are empty. Easiest way to tell.

First houses are such a challange! We got one too and have been doing things 1 at a time with breaks. Refencing the front is on our list too.

Good Morning Everyone.
Does anyone ever have chicken play dates?

Already covered but not the best idea. I do give the hens in pens rooster less days. They like those.

Oh he knows how. But most likely he'd stand around and supervise. And by supervise I mean complain.

Ha!my dad is reaching that stage. But he knows he is more irritable so he tries so hard...

:lau   I already have 1 too many! :gig

I thought that the "failure to thrive" losses usually happened in the first week or two.  Can it still happen when they are that old?

I had to stop free feeding mine.  I was feeding the neighborhood cats!  Don't know why they are so attracted to chicken feed but they are.  My dogs go batty for it too.  :th

My dog will only eat cat food and chicken food. And fresh veggies..

this is my momma hen and her chicks(my now hens) this last may and now she is sleeping under table that the bator is on, waiting for her grand babies to hatch lol she is full grown and weighs 2lbs and when the time came to move her babies outside my 100lb Rott was very curious and momma hen chased her off and for first week slept in their starter coop with them lol
