5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Quote: Thank you I have sent messages out.

Quote: It is more likely to happen at the chick stage. It can happen at any age though. And I could see that she was growing slower than she should have been since week one. But I was giving her her own feeding and watering time 3 times a day once I mixed all the chicks together. I had another chick grow slower but she turned out fine and is now laying eggs every day. I guess I was hoping for that kind of an outcome. I'm typically hands off so I did not bring her inside or give her a special cage just made sure she had 5-10 minutes of time to eat and drink when I went out to refill the water each day.

the top two are blood rings. It is a dead embryo--Bacteria and etc.

Thank you, ronnott. I don't have any with blood rings, but I do have a clear...egg #9...I knew that it was a dud, didn't know you call it a "clear". It's only day 6 for me, I read to wait till day 10 to remove...should I still do so since it looks like your "clear" egg image? Or should I take it out now?

Wait until day 10.

I crack open each egg I take out to see what was going on. Clears almost always have not development. Sometimes you will find a little embryo that did not develop veins.

That's a great photo of a blood ring ron.

Is anyone getting snow? We are actually starting to be in the 30's in the day again..whew, it's been cold. I know not as cold as in some places, but we don't care for the cold..and, the air that is just hanging out there, and it's nasty air! Glad we live a bit higher from the valley..it really is bad down there. We are to get a small little storm that will help clear the muck tomorrow and Fri. Thank goodness, nice bright blue sky again.

We had flurries...nothing stuck...then it turned to sleet and everything was covered in ice. This happened a few days ago. My chickens were NOT happy campers...my rooster, Zeus, is aggressive (he's to become dinner on Friday)...you'd think he'd be up for any challenge. Not the ice. When I let them out for the day, he wouldn't step foot on it. He'd hang by the coop while the girls free ranged...and when he did move, it was to go on top of the run or to stand on a pile of leaves. Chicken.

Here's a pic of Zeus...he's so pretty, it sucks he has to go to freezer camp:

Added to what list? There's a list? I wanna be on a list! Wait...what's it mean if you ARE on the list??? :idunno

It is a list of participants. No pressure.

This reminds me of a story. We were driving through Chinatown in San Francisco and saw a long line of people. Clearly there was something amazing there and I told him to park and we would stand in it. After 10 min of not being able to find a parking spot I got vetoed. DH told me I had a thing about lines. I opened my mouth to argue with him only to realize he was right!

The urge to stand in long lines has gotten much worse since then I'm sure he regrets pointing it out now.

The week before thanksgiving there was a 100 or so person line at the farmers market. He grabbed me and made me walk on the other side of the street! I still wonder what we missed.

Could you please tell me what blood rings are, what they mean, where they are, and how to find them? I saw this term referenced elsewhere and I have no idea what blood rings are. I need to know what to look for in my eggs since this is my first hatch. Thank you!

I pulled 6 out the other night, blood rings in all of them. Have 8 I am going to check tonight that were clear when I candled on day 7 or 8. Hoping some have something going on in them. If not that will then leave me with 24 eggs. Lock down for me is X-Mas eve

He is a beautiful rooster. I had one of those last year, he attacked my 2 year old son twice and he was a goner. I dont tolerate aggressive roosters. Roosters I have this year have been great boys, except for one. Have a feeling he will be going this weekend.
