5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Oh my gosh, I love this thread! All the OT information has been wonderful. I decided to switch my laying hens to grower, and offer oyster shells. But here's a question: if suddenly commercial stuff like that wasn't available, how would our girls get their calcium - from eggs shells?

Egg shells are a great source of calcium. Save them, crunch them up and add them to the Oyster shells.

I am so excited! All 14 of my MFL are showing tremendous veining! As are the 6 mutts

The two EE's are further developed then any of the others. It's only those dumb CL's that just wouldn't grow. Makes me happy though, that all of the eggs from our chickens are growing.

Except to check the CL's on Sat, I won't candle until lock down. I'm already paranoid that just a little handling will somehow hurt them.

The veins were so clear though, all I had to do was hold the (modified) flashlight to the egg and I could see them. So it was a quick trip out of the incubator (steady, steady :) ) and back in. Then my knee bumped the table leg and I cannot believe how clumsy I am! Hoping that little jostle didn't somehow set them all off track. Looks like incubation is the easy part. Hatching has all those other variables though... (where is the little nervous, biting it's nails, icon?)
Sorry about the CLs , but that is great on the others!

I don't take my eggs out to candle. I put the light on top of the egg and can see everything that is going on. I do have the high intensity Ovaview candler though which helps

I do that too. I only take the iffy ones out for a closer look and then move them to the watch section of the incubator.

Well before I had all my eggs gathered for this hatch, I posted on here that our hens was not meeting their daily quota. They went from 11 eggs a day to 3-5. Well today I just so happened to find all those missing eggs hid in their yard piled under a bunch of hay. Those little turds was hiding their eggs from me.

They had me all worried that I wasn't going to have enough eggs for the hatch and our egg customers didn't get their eggs.
