Hey ya'll, I need help.

I had problems with humidity being way too high for the first five days. I was advised to remove all water and go dry for a few days. Humidity has been at 16% for two days.

Today is day 7. I candled, and traced the air cells with a pencil (not sure if that was ok to do, but hadn't come across a post that said it wasn't). I think my air cells are too small, based on the reference picture located in post #1. I'm posting some pics of the traced air cells, hoping someone could tell me if they are too small.

I'm down to 7 eggs out of 10. I knew #'s 8 and 9 were clears, had movement in the rest, until today...egg #6 is still. No movement. So I think it's a quitter, but leaving it just in case.

This is the one with no movement. Is that dark ring a "blood ring"?

It doesn't look like a blood ring to me. And your cells look a little small but not to far off. I would try to keep the humidity low between 20 and 30%. Those are some nice sized brown eggs!!

Or maybe I am so use to looking at my itty bitty bantams. =)

Air cells are a bit small. Stick with the lower humidity for a while yet. The questionable egg looks suspicious but not "for sure dead." I would recheck it in 3-4 dsys & see if there is any change. Sometimes they will look clouded at certain stages of development & you swear they are dead but when you check a few days later they are definitely alive. Always err on the side of caution.

They are decent sized eggs. Sometimes. LOL. Sometimes I get small ones...but they are usually large eggs. I have one Commercial Black girl that lays gigantic eggs...not every day, usually every 3 days...those whoppers are usually double yolkers. Once I got a triple yolker!

Ok, I'll keep water out of the bator for now.

I wasn't planning on taking the egg out yet. I'll wait till day 10. If it's still the same size with no movement, I'll get rid of it then. The clears as well. Hope I don't lose any more, if this one IS a quitter.

X2 I agree with this. The air cells do look a tad small, keeping the humidity down for a few days will help take some of the moisture out of the eggs and make the air cell larger. And the questionable egg does look "suspicious" so it could go either way but it is definitely not a blood ring(possibly an early quitter maybe).

Oh my gosh, I love this thread! All the OT information has been wonderful. I decided to switch my laying hens to grower, and offer oyster shells. But here's a question: if suddenly commercial stuff like that wasn't available, how would our girls get their calcium - from eggs shells?

In the wild they get it from bugs.

[COLOR=4B0082]Well before I had all my eggs gathered for this hatch, I posted on here that our hens was not meeting their daily quota. They went from 11 eggs a day to 3-5. Well today I just so happened to find all those missing eggs hid in their yard piled under a bunch of hay. Those little turds was hiding their eggs from me. They had me all worried that I wasn't going to have enough eggs for the hatch and our egg customers didn't get their eggs.[/COLOR]

I set my eggs on the 12/12/13 so they will hatch on the 2nd day of New Years ( Aus time )
