5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I candled today and pulled 19 for obvious reasons like being clear or no development. Went from 74 to 55 eggs.

You could have 55 Chicks!

I'm like that too, i need a strict routine lol. this is my first hatch so it will lay the foundation for future hatches! one problem I have tho is us to this point the humidity in my house was 27% so I was keeping the humidity up in my bator cuz it kept dropping low. then last night it rained and melted the foot of snow we had so now my house humidity is up to 50% and my bator humidity just keeps climbing

I'm not adding water now till lock down cuz my air cells still need to shrink. the weather threw me through a loop

I use the hatch chart and the air cell guide to candle and try real hard to candle on those days.

I candled last night but I don't know if that would've affected them. it was day 10.


day 11-14, you should not candle for that reason of growth.
sadly, those days are from the 22-25th, and I wanted to candle on my birthday, the 25th. guess that wont be happening! haha

Candeled my eggs last night. I started with 53. After the peek this is what I'm down to:

12 set from my own flock of leghorn/polish cross. All 12 are happy, developing bouncing babies. No doubt my rooster is doing his duties.

8 blue Orpington shipped eggs purchases for. eBay. 6 are doing great. 2 were early quitters. Air cells look okay, but not perfect.

15 lemon cuckoo orpingtons purchased and shipped from a BYC member. I only have two of these left and both I'm not sure if still developing. About 7 of these were non-fertile and the rest had broken yoked and air cells.

18 mix of EE, OE, and Marans purchased and shipped by another member. I have 12 of these doing okay. Lots of funky looking air cells and very watery/moving air cells. Only two were infertile.

I have learned from this, not to waste money on shipped eggs! I think I'll stick to day old chick purchases and hatch out my own farm eggs

I will take some ebay specials,, i would have nothin but hatcher birds if not,, When you 4000 mile from birdland,, Then you go with what you got,, I am in Fairbanks Alaska,end of the line..i mean i hear of a gal about 150 mile north of here near the Arctic Circle ,raising birds. there was no egg availible come feb,march last spring when I wanted to fire my new incubator up. Now I got facebook groups,,I will not have to rely on ebay. I have a few bad experiences but I got some great birds..Which now I am setting their eggs.If you can get them without shipping,,Then Sweet<<<Me,, I will take those shipped eggs,,only the strong survive anyway,,, hope get some good hatch rate with whats left..Peace,,,

Highly recommend folks that have several different hatching day ..Build yourself one one these incubators..Used the hot water heater or whatever you can..But this way you keep to different humidity .Mine keeps temps just as good as the Hova,,,Peace....

Oh, BTW....the egg that I accidentally cracked and then glazed with super glue is one of the ones that is growing strong....who knew.....curious to see she makes it all the way thru to hatch.....if she does I'll have to name her lucky....

Love your hatcher. I plan to build me a small cabinet incubator with attached, but separate hatcher. I hope mine turns out as stable as yours.

Thanks to all for well wishes for my lone remaining SFH. I hope it is a pullet as well. I will continue to buy shipped eggs because that is the only way I can get some of the breeds I want. Plus, I've had results from both ends of the spectrum. My first shipped eggs were ancona ducks and all 3 developed fully (only got two ducklings as the 3rd tore vessels in the membrane while turning and bled out). These SFH were my second shipped eggs and the insides looked like they had been carried by Ace Ventura

. I'm wondering if it may have been worse because of the time of year. Also the seller offered to replace the eggs if I took pics of the scrambled ones and paid shipping. Sadly, silly me didn't think to take any pics when I cracked them open to check them out.

Oh humidity!!

Mine drops to 16 (which could actually mean much lower) every 3rd day or so... When I add water it spikes to 40s or 50s. I've got some with HUGE air cells, and some with tiny ones....I'm trying shifting them around some.

I shifted mine the ones by where I add water and the water sits has the smallest ones on other side of bator biggest so I flipped them around.

I'm a little nervous myself for lockdown......I've had so many problems with my humidity.


I'm going on lockdown three days before. so ill be doing it in 6 days.
