5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I can think of a LOT worse things for a teen to spend their money on! Sounds like you are very responsible. Incubating is an incredible learning experience! And if you sell eggs for an income later, you can say

to your sister!

I second that! LOL You could have a pretty good business opportunity blooming!

I am thinking of putting some roosts up in my goats house and making it into a bigger coop because the chickens spend all their time in the goat shed and the goats sleep under the chicken coop... so we built the goats a small 3 by 3 house they can snuggle in off the ground and im slowly adding chicken things to the bigger goat house. I already have nesting boxes and some roosts. I wanna still add more windows for the spring and a door so I can lock them up, or just make it more predator proof. its cute on rainy days the 4 chickens and 2 goats all lounge in the hay in the goat house

Pretty sad that there are more stockings for animals than there are for people!
aahahah your just like me!

This looks really cute, but it also looks heavy. Other things to consider would be removing the food and water before moving the coop as slanted water spills. After having built what I wanted to be a movable tractor coop, I recommend making a list of materials and getting estimated weights before choosing any tractor style. Also consider the wheels and where you might get them. They are not as easy to find as one would think. Also not as cheap as one would think.
yeah.......we have already done so! thank you

Come on chickies!!

(photos as soon as I can get them - currently looking through coop window like a stalker!!!)

My 10 y/o daughter and I candled tonight. On day 11, of the 29 that we started with, we have 21 progressing, 2 slightly possible, and 6 clear duds. We will try again on day 18, before lock down. Overall I am pleased, and am already planning our next hatch.

My littlest likes to watch me candle the eggs. Makes me nervous as all get out. But today after lunch here he comes bringing the flashlight to me. He had somehow turned it on, twist cap and all. I thought for sure my eggs were goners but instead he wanted to candle my every expanding belly. Not bad for a 2 yr old. Who knows maybe someday he will make a great male midwife.

400

they got bored waiting for the eggs to hatch lol I'm extremely concerned about the first two or more weeks brooding in the house with 4 cats :/ one having already got to one of our parakeets... any suggestions on keeping cats away? I was thinking a Rubbermaid box that I can clamp the top on but then cut out holes and replace with hardware cloth
