5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I did the same thing, I got a flashlight for $14 and it had over 200 lumen and it still would not work for my dark Production Red/ Golden Star/ Redstar eggs. I went back to a cardboard box with a light bulb inside.

Get a plumbing part for your flashlight works wonders.
I need 400 l to see in marans eggs

oh okay. thanks ron. how do i candle quail eggs?   since there so tiny

I use a plumbing part for this too. Usually you want the female part yo be about 1/2 inch for quail eggs. And the male to fit the flashlight ( or the other way dosnt matter)
Quail eggs you won't see detail but the clears will glow faintly blue.
I have a couple of marans eggs with air sacks that I can't see. Does this mean they aren't viable?

Marans eggs will also glow if they are all clear. If you see nothing then light at the top leave them in unless they smell. I can't usually see veins in all marans just chick mass.
:weee WOW-EEEEEEEEEE!!! Tonight is Day 20...I was making my breakfast and I heard one of the eggs moving. It was a quick tapping sound as it was moving against other eggs! Kinda feel like waking everyone up but they would be mad...so I figured who would be as eggcited as me? My BYC peeps!

I couldn't get the humidity up at lockdown, but a feminine hygiene product brought it up to 58%. Dd was amused by that.

There are five small eggs in there from the CCL eggs I had shipped...possibly new layers because they are bantam size. Because they are so small, is it possible they could hatch early?

Yes it's a pad. We used to tease ron about having to buy them for us mega hatching on the nor cal thread.
Hey hey everyone. Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. Y daughter got engaged, I ran all over Ohio on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day spent the whole day running. I skipped over 20 plus pages. Hope I didn't miss anything important

Huzzah!

Hmm just opened the new 9200 LG and notice no plastic insert like my gen 1588. Do they sell a plastic insert for this thing or do I have the pain to clean every hatch?

Try paper Towles and put the water on sponges or a tiny bowl.

yeah I guess i'll have to do it that way just weird compared to my gen 1588. The vent holes are in middle of the bottom not on sides like on the 1588. Makes me think they will have a hard time making a liner for it.

so my birthday is January 11 and my boyfriend is on vacation from work so for an early bday present he is going to build me a brooder/coop for my chickies :) does anyone have any good ideas? I'm going to brood in the house for the first couple weeks then move them to the shed or their new coop depending on how many hatch, then after a while I'll let them free range with my pullets and slowly get them used to each other and then they could all move into the same run

You have a great boyfriend!

My Birthday is January 8th.

Well I went to TSC and bought a little giant. Wife wasn't that impressed till I pointed out I'm using Christmas money. Even then I could see the flames and smoke building up but then I took her to walmart and let her get some Christmas stuff for the tree. I don't think I'm forgiven but maybe off the hook for a bit.

Sneaky aren't you? And you think your wife was really upset didn't you? But she got something out of it didn't she? Ey?

After all the problems I've had the past few days, I actually turned the incubator temp down. Now it's running about 97/98 degrees. Is this good for the last 6 days?

Still catching up..but in case no one answered, you need it up a bit higher for the last 6 days..keep it around the 99.5 or 100.
