5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Montanadolphin double or tripple up the scren if you have to. A problem might be what the screen is made of and how easy it is to rip. Attaching it maybe tricky.

So, hands down, most stressful hatch I've had in years. They are pipping in dribs and drabs, we are now up to 5 hatched. One is in pretty bad shape. I took Ron's advice and put him in a cup, slathered him in antibiotic ointment and gave him some liquid baby vitamins (no iron) for good measure. I just got him out to check him over again and it appears as if the cord attached and dried to his leg, so every time he straightened his leg he would pull his intestines? out again. (sorry to be so graphic). This lil one is a fighter, chirping away, so I again slathered in ointment and back in the cup he went. Am I just prolonging his misery? Here is a pic:

I feel terrible that none of the D'Uccle eggs from MsLadyHawke as a gift to my youngest daughter hatched. They were progressing fine so I know they were fertile and it was an error on my part that they didn't hatch.

The good news is…I have 4 happy healthy chicks in the brooder. Another egg just pipped so if the guy pictured above makes it, he'll have someone to go in the brooder with.

Snip the cord close to the leg. It does not look like intestines so it should go back in. Bleeding or oozing from the hernia would be bad.

There is a chance so not delaying the inevitable. Give that chick a couple of days.

Montana Dolphin I would consider stapleing or taping cardboard over the screen . if you cats and maybe the dog cant see in they might be less prone to try to get the chicks. most not all St Bernards will not hurt the chicks at all. age would be one factor if she is still puppy less than 18 months or so I would keep her away . good luck I know you will do well with them. :)

Yep, that's exactly what i'm gonna do. Was just talking to my step dad about it. I really think it's the only way to keep them safe.

If i remember right. You are using a wood frame. Depending on how thick the wood is i would use 1/2-3/4 inch screw#10. And fender washers. The screws look like half as wide as they are long almost. You could use staples as back up. I use that set up for my wooden brooders with hardware cloth. I dont use staples but cloth is stronger than the screen your using.

Ron, I SO needed to hear that. This is the one Creole Orpington that hatched, poor thing. Still in the cup so we'll see.
to Blarneyeggs:

very cute chicks, what are they?
The 3 in front are F2 OEs from my coop. The lighter colored one is a BBS Orpington…I'm afraid to assume splash as I want a splash in the WORST way! So I'm just going to hope it is!!
