5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I moved all my eggs into my little giant- day 20 for the two on the end, day 18 for the other 4.
So when I moved the two from my little incubator to the other I felt something on the bottom of the egg.... I have a pip!! But the poor baby is on the wrong end! The baby is still alive right now. I have read the assisted hatch articles, and I know it isn't time now to assist because there is some blood in the pip.... PLEASE baby....fight!

camon little chickie! you CAN do it! you got help if you cant!!!!

the wiggling egg is wigging more.....then it chirped!!!! I may get a 19 day pip!

so what if the chick pips on the side of the egg that is laying down? will it sill be able to pip, or could the chick just reposition its egg?

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED TO HEAR CHIRPING FORM WIGGLES!!! (that's what im naming the chick in that egg) LOL

I'll bet you do have a pip by tonight! Let that egg do it's thing. If it pips on the bottom side, leave it alone. The biggest thing is to NOT open that incubator at all once you see an external pip..unless absolutely necessary. You do not want to deal with shrink wrapped chicks, it is terrible..trust me.

ok! thanks for your help!!!

I hope I get a pip tonight! how would I know if I have one? I want to start a 24 hour clock when I see one.

I have never lost a chick that has pipped wrong end, and never had to assist one (I know some have, just my experience). Don't get me wrong..it makes me nervous, but they are amazing little buggers. If you believe in the power of prayer..now is the time. I kid you not, I pray constantly through the whole hatch! One night I was assisting a chick in my bedroom in the middle of the night, and DH likes to tell the story that he woke up to the lights blaring and it sounded like a tent revival going on in our bedroom, lol! I get a little worked up over hatching!

Augh. This is killing me.

Does anyone else who set on the 11th have any pips yet? Should I have pips yet? I heard peeping late the day before yesterday and now nothing.

I am going to be even MORE grayhaired by the time this is done!

Maybe I should leave hatching eggs to the experts. Or a broody hen. Or buy a bigger incubator. One of those things.

Ideally you will just see that pretty little mounded crack right on top, but I'm in the habit of shining the flashlight around the bottom of the egg and looking for tiny bits of shell. That's the easiest way to find underside pippers.

ok! so sort of look for fallen shell or a strange limp of shell on the egg? sounds good!
