5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

ok! thanks for your help!!!

I hope I get a pip tonight! how would I know if I have one? I want to start a 24 hour clock when I see one.

Not sure someone showed you yet..the first one is a pip..the second one is starting to zip..I am hoping the right way! I've them try and zip down the egg in the middle before, it kind of looks like this one may be trying to do the same..second one, zipping.
See that tiny white spot? Pip! This is a light colored egg..shadowing makes it look darker..this is a Rhodebar pipped. :) Makes me happy. :) :)

See this one going to town..a zip started. Will have a baby soon now..A Rhodebar!

Quote:Thanks. What happens if it's too high? Mine keeps wanting to go to 80.

What are you using for a Hygrometer? And are you confident in its accuracy? I'm new to this but I would think at 80% or higher you'd be seeing condensation, or fogging on the windows of the incubator. My last hatch I used a Accu-Rite thermometer/ Hygrometer and was TRYING to get to 60% the last three days, but my viewing windows were all fogged up.. Which now I'm guessing means I was a LOT higher than 60%.

Exactly!

It may not be as high as you think. I would not worry unless the windows fogged up.

the wiggling egg is wigging more.....then it chirped!!!! I may get a 19 day pip!

so what if the chick pips on the side of the egg that is laying down? will it sill be able to pip, or could the chick just reposition its egg?

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED TO HEAR CHIRPING FORM WIGGLES!!! (that's what im naming the chick in that egg) LOL
I know there isn't much room for moving around.
Augh. This is killing me.

Does anyone else who set on the 11th have any pips yet? Should I have pips yet? I heard peeping late the day before yesterday and now nothing.

I am going to be even MORE grayhaired by the time this is done!

Maybe I should leave hatching eggs to the experts. Or a broody hen. Or buy a bigger incubator. One of those things.
I set 2 doz. on the 11th and no pips but I thought I heard a peep the day I weighed them.

It's okay - I laugh at me, too! Fortunately, (I say, fortunately) husband knows most of what removes what - and now I know that rubbing alcohol removes Sharpie!
I've got 16 Freedom Rangers due at midnight the 31st.... Or whenever they darn well please ;). Started with 25, nine were clear at first candling, and everyone else is hanging in there. Roo is energetic & fertile, but they're not terribly coordinated, and the ladies aren't as compliant as my other breeds...

There isn't room for a vessel - it's a brinsea20, is why I cut up washcloths to lay on floor below basket. Not even really room for the sponge trick.
So I take it you didn't process all of your freedom rangers? A friend of mine took two of my FR pullets for egg layers and to be company for a lone hen.
I'm curious if they breed true.

I have a couple adjustable cheap dial type that were reading 60 when it was actually 32 this morning. I put them outside for an hour and then looked up my humidity on Accuweather.
I have a couple digitals that are a little more reliable.

Isn't it amazing to hear the eggs chirping at you? I love it and don't think it will ever get old to me.

No peeps or pips for me yet, and I set at noon (about) on the 11th. I had no internal pips yet when I candled and marked aircells last night either. But some of them were stretching up into it a lot when I candled so may have some internal pips by now.

Only the chick knows, but chirping is very good. Bantams notoriously hatch earlier than LargeFowl, not as a rule, it just often seems to go that way. Be patient, and get everything you need to get done now, because once that first egg pips, you'll be glued to that incubator for the remainder. Hatching is looong, and (for me anyway) draining. No joke, I get bruises on the tops of my legs from pulling a chair up and propping my elbows on my thighs to hover over the window for hours at a time. The day after a hatch I'm exhausted.
I do the same! I have a chair set in front of the incubator and once I get that first pip I am glued to it.

I have two accuright that are in 1-2% of eachother. My viewing windows are not fogging up. Could that be because I have air vents right by it? Or maybe they are both wrong? If I don't have any external pips, can I pull the eggs out for a few minutes while I adjust the reservoirs?

FWIW, I had two identical thermometer hygrometers that were within 1 degree/% of each other, and they were both wrong. Killed a whole lot of chicks overheating them.

Two pips in my Tolbunt Polish, and this morning I can see them moving around via the little hole they have each made. I squawked like a mama hen and they cheeped back! My DH knows for sure now that I am crazy. I let him know that I ordered more hatching eggs for when these ones are done. He just looked at me! I said "Its better to ask for forgiveness than for permission!" Haha crack myself up! Hopefully tonight my 2 SFH start pipping.
