5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

It's a cute little thing.  It probably isn't a naked neck.  When they fluff out, the skin will all be covered, and it will be cute and fluffy like a baby chick.  Looks to be a blue.  Very pretty color of blue.

Hmm, took another look, if it has blue skin, it could be a silkie..but I think that I am seeing some extra neck skin..you may have a Show Girl!  The beak looks like a silkies or a Show Girls..will you post a photo of her when she dries?  I love Show Girls!

I talked to the lady I got the eggs from, and she said it is likely a show girl! It should be all fluffed when I get back from my party, and I'll post a picture. It was hard to leave!

If the temperature was correct and the breed hatches in 21 days, then they will hatch over the 21st day. Some breeds hatch early, some hatch late. Marans are notoriously late and can hatch over the 23 day. Some Bantams, Icelandics, EEs and etc. will hatch on the 20th day.

Chickens are not like a vending machine--You can't pop in some quarters and get a chick out. They often work in their own frustratingly slow time frame...

I love it!

okay that makes sense. yes this is frustratingly slow... I think I'll set up my brooder to pass the time lol

I just re-read competition rules. I did not take a picture of 'set' eggs. ah well. I just hope they hatch at this point. Moved the rest of the full size eggs to hatcher, one pipped in the turner. Been listening to quiet peeps for a couple hours now. Not quite as shy as they have been but still somewhat subdued.

Hey, everyone!

I'm sorry not to join you this year. I'd like to wish everyone luck and happy hatching, though, and hope to see more of you in general.

I've got the new facility up and running and have been moving forward with many of my projects, though I did sell off a bunch of foundation stock when I thought I was out of breeding. The laying has begun, so I hope to take part in the next Hatch-a-long! My farm partner, Pinwheel, will also probably join in a hatch soon, too! We're psyched to move into the spring crazies with you all, and with the help, I'll have a bit of time to check in with you all, now.

I'll read some of this thread over and catch up!!

Glad to be back!!

20 hours in and my little wrong ender was still not out. I assisted.... now he is in the incubator resting in half of the egg. I am reluctant to pull him the rest of the way out worried that the yolk sac isn't fully absorbed yet. Taking the girls to the movies and when I get back I hope he has freed himself the rest of the way.
You jinxed yourself! Now it is surely to be a roo!!!

Same thing happened to me! My Silver Laced Wyandotte X Easter Egger pipped right in the middle of the egg yesterday around 11 AM. I let him rest all day and all last night. Finally, I started assisting this morning around 6 AM. I had to do it all before 8 cause I will be working until past midnight tonight. So, I got opened the top of the egg so that her head was open(please be a her!) and just let her work her way out. I was able to come home for lunch and she is up and running around the Brinsea Mini in little circles! :) yay! There was a little bit of blood... but not too bad. GOOD LUCK Myfourladies!!!!!

2 Marans pipped wrong end! I haven't lost a wrong end pipper yet. We shall see. Lol, this is hatching..I was already nervous about how thick those Marans shells were, turns out that's the least of it!

Lord please be with my chickies!
Funny you say that. I was just thinking that God must hear a lot of prayers for chickens during these few days of the hatch-a-longs! :) My wrong ender made it! yay! Good luck with yours! Keep us posted!

I did! About 6 hours. I know from past experience that it can take a long time from peep to pip. But I jumped out of bed fast this morning!
Same! Good luck!

Hi Renee!

That is good news!

There is a new productivity thread that would be perfect for you Rangers

My first hatcher is getting pretty fluffy and dried off - should I move her into the brooder? They are marans, so they could take two more days to hatch, though I think (hope) I hear another internal pip. It's a brinsea mini and she has hardly any room. She can't even really stand. But, the faint chirps are probably consoling to her. Decisions, decisions.

Woot another pip this time leghorn x amer. Getting mad though because I cant find my web cam so I cant watch on my screen like I like to do. I got a new desk and I have no idea where it went to. My wife and I both thought we saw it over here at new desk but no dice.

We have chickage!
:weee
Sparkle is a surrogate mother again! One of the two eggs has hatched. She was clucking and poking her head under her body, then a little head poked out from her feathers. It cheeped a bit, then snuggled back into Sparkle's feathers.
:love

She hatched this chick early; I was anticipating watching her and the Tournament of Roses Parade tomorrow morning as the eggs hatched.
