Ok......so if I did brig in any other chicken eggs, and hatch them, I could vaccinate those and none of my chickens could have mareks? I KNOW my chickens don't because they have never been around it and show no signs.
From what I can tell, Mareks is everywhere so your flock does have it but did not show symptoms. It is a real problem with breeds that are not resistant. I have never had a death from the initial infection or symptoms(I know because I send mine in for Necropsy). I have had one die of mareks cancer at 21 weeks old. You can safely mix not vaccinated and vaccinated(4 days after inoculating them--look that up though) but the vaccine does not prevent Mareks. It protects a percentage of them from getting Markes cancer when they are older.
I liked the medicine for animals post yesterday. Mareks is like HPV in Humans. Roughly 30% of Ovarian cancer is caused by that virus. The Vaccine may prevent it. With people is also prevents you from getting HPV thoug. In chickens it does ntowork that way.
The take away is that you will never get rid of Mareks with the currently available vaccine. Please research all of this though and make the decision that is best for you.

thanks for all your help! everyone was very respectful in this hatch! we all supported eachother!
that's TOO cute! if I go to grab a chick out of my brooder, all the others run up to it and try to fly onto it to get it back in! LOL its like nemo, but with chickens!![]()
Yours are mostly Silkies! They are the biggest pets in the chicken world. Mine are Penedesenca and Cream Legbar based so they should hate me. So fart they love me though and are very friendly. My chickens are usually friendly though.
My little OE chicks needed me last night. They woke up hungry and chirping--I had to turn the light on and let them eat!
They are going down stairs today. There is more light down there so they should be able to find the food if they need a mid night snack....
Silly chickens!![]()
Keeping fingers crossed! When will the cute chick contest start..or are you counting the ones that say...this one has my vote? Thanks ron!
My lonely chick is still in lock down. Hopefully I see a pip tonight! Tomorrow is day 21. I hope it makes it. It has all this time, out of 4 doz. eggs..come on little one! All of the other eggs took a full week to get here. :/ The paper that was around them was all damp. But this little chick made. So far.![]()
Congrats! So glad these did better than the last ones.
Chicks are doing well, did lose one the first day. But out of 55, having 46 hatch and only to lose 1 was very good. I also had some hatch yesterday which have been tossed into a brooder.
Had a great hatch yesterday 11/12 La Flèche were fertile. 11 entered the hatcher. Had 9 viable chicks, 1 drown in blood, 1 did not absorb its organs completely. Better than my odds with the La Flèche on New Years.
Going to have a lot of material to select from this year.

YAY congrats!!! I hope you share pics with us once mama shares with you.
My 11 yr old DD recently discovered showgirls and now she wants some, also Naked necks. DH isn't gonna be happy that I am passing my addiction on to our daughters. She even insisted that out of her Silkies that just hatched she NEEDS a rooster. DH told her if she could give him a good reason why she NEEDS a rooster then she could keep one. Her response- "I need a rooster so they can have babies and then I can sell the babies to have money to pay for the food" Sounds like something I would say. DH said "Good answer you can have one rooster".
Her response to me was "Mom you already have 4 roosters, So I need one too". LOL I couldn't argue with her.
