5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

leave them with the mama....watch till they hatch and then take the babies....or you can hatch in your brooder. I finished my messed up broody hatch in my brooder since I had no bator........they all came out just fine! 2 chicks hatched in there.
Ok, mama is still sitting on them - not as much as before but she was on lock down tonight as soon as I moved baby#4. I will keep my eyes open for the first signs and then move them to the brooder to complete the hatch. Can I put them back with mama after that while she is asleep?

you could see if putting them back is safe....are you just taking the eggs out so she doesn't do anything to the babies? if she is broody and taking care of other chicks im sure you can pop those babies in.....just watch her in case she would reject them.

also when moving the eggs to the brooder be careful they don't get too cold or that they font plastic wrap.....you know what I mean.....just put some water in your brooder know so you can keep up the humidity and not cause anything bad for them....

GOOD LUCK! I definitely agree broody hatches are hard.....especially when the mother is stubborn like mine! did you read my article? if not that's fine!

I did read your story ~ It made me go out and check the baby one more time. I was hoping to do some cpr to baby 4 but no luck - she is cold too. Still totally movable not stiff. Strange.

I am just going to move them out during the hatch itself I think. Since I don't have any way to keep them warm I figure that having Mama sit on them will be best. She doesn't display any interest in the eggs other than sitting on them. I will put in the water in the brooder - thank you I didn't think of that.

She seems to be a very good mom so far. When I watched the video it seemed like she moved the baby away from the group. She seems to be determined to hatch out all of the eggs.

good for her! you mean she moved the dead baby away from the others and the nest? that's so sad! after my hen did what she had done to our chicks we decided not to give any to her.....none of our chicks have ever met a mother to care for them....all but Cadbury. we was with turkey (the mom) for a day before the other chick insodents had happened.

good luck once again! keep in touch!

Here are the pictures of my NYD Babies. They are Crele Penedesenca X Cream Legbar bread back to a Crele Penedesenca Cockerel.

i love them ron! how many of each gender do you have?

The last three pictures look like boys. The first picture is questionable. The middle three look like pullets. The next two weeks will show very big differences in Combs so I will know for sure soon.

Your chicks are looking great! Unbelievable how fast your boys are showing. So far the feather color on both your males and females seem similar. What color are you expecting both genders to be as adults?
