5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Need some HELP!! I have a silkie chick with what I think is Wry Neck.... has anyone had experiance with this? How can I be sure it isn't something worse? Should I just cull the chick? I am so sad, but don't want it to suffer more. I had to be one we already named!! =(

B vitamins!

Use poly vi sol without iron. They are baby drops and are in the infant section and or the vitamin section of Walmart and etc. Put a drop on the beak and they will drink it. give her a drop in the morning and the evening. Wry neck goes away quickly

Because Silkies have a vaulted skull, they are susceptible to brain injuries. If you suspect that, thee is an aspirin treatment that you may want to try to reduce swelling.

Giving Poly vitamins, first thing I did. =) She will untwist and eat which makes me think it isn't her brain....do you think that is a good assumption?

The biggest Silkie expert I know is @chiqita . I bet she will respond now but if not send her a pm.

At this point it is likely to be vitamin deficiency. The things I have found to work the best are nutri drench and vegamite. They are both easily digestable sources of bs and es. (Unless she is with bigger chicks and could get a peck in the head)

Give her drops directly on her beak a few times a day. If you see ZERO IMPROVEMENT try giving her 1/4 or less of a low dose aspirin (used to be baby asprin) as something to take down brain swelling.

If that dosnt work the other things you can do are more complicated and may be too much for a small chick.

Can she eat and drink?

I seen her eating and drinking earlier, I have to watch because she gets in the water fountain and can't get back out! I was for sure she had drown earlier today. =/ If I even go near the box it seems to make her worse so I am just trying to keep thing quiet and stress free.
She is house with a larger chick. She is 2 weeks old and the other older chick is 4 weeks old.... I haven't seen any picking thou.

Well start with the direct vitamins. Starseed one of my chicks this year (ok late last year but she is still inside) developed severe wry in about 1/2 hr while I was out of the house and freaked me out. Nutri fixed it that day. My older silkie who had to be hand fed and watered needed about 2 weeks to clear up. Some cases take months but those usually take stronger medication and have permanent neural damage.

Thank you. =) I seen her kind of crooked yesterday, but just assumed it was nothing. This morning she was total laying out, head upside down, full blown wry neck. I haven't seen it before so it freaked me out, and petrified my special needs daughter to see her like that. Now that I know what is going on it is less scary, but still freaky. I hope she gets better and that she is a she.... I won't regret saving a life, but man wouldn't be awful for her to be a 'he' and just have him in the freezer next fall.....

I hope so too!

You should be able to find a home for a Silkie Cockerel. They are gorgeous!

Is there anyone from the NYE hatch that is also doing the Easter hatch-a-long?

I am setting some eggs in the bator Friday so I can get the chicks for my neighbor grown up and out of the brooder before we start our Easter Rhodebars.
