Hi all

I am posting this thread all the way from New Zealand

I need some help sexing my poultry! I have four that I originally thought were roosters but none have started crowing at 7 months old. If they are roosters, I have to give them away since we can't keep them in urban areas.

The grey chick is my favourite and I want to be sure before I give him/her away...he/she loves coming and giving me cuddles and jumps on my lap to have a rest etc. So any help in sexing these chickies would be much appreciate :)

I also have a photo of the grey one (first photo) when it was younger but I am not sure what age it was when it was taken (I know this may not be much help)

If you are sure they are 6-7 months old they are all pullets, cockerels would have saddle and hackle feathers by that time. They look like mixed breeds, possibly 2nd gen sexlinks [coloring is no longer sex linked if you breed the birds back together] except the blue one which looks like an Australorp mix.

All are pullets, if they are indeed 6-7 months old. The blue one is probably a Blue Australorp or Opington mix, the mostly red one could be a Red Sex-Link, and the others are random mixes.

My mum said they are around 5 months....sorry for misinformation. Hopefully she is right!

I guess this changes the probability of them being pullets?

In fact just about exactly 5 months....that first photo of the blue/grey one when it was younger would be at around 2 months

Still a good chance all are pullets at 5 months, though the sickle feathers on the cockerels may not be as pronounced yet, there'd be visible hackles and pointed saddle feathers on males. At that age the hens are getting ready to lay eggs so their combs turn redder.

No it doesn't change it. They would still have saddle feathers and much larger wattles if cockerels. Definitely pullets. Judging by the red combs on most you'll be getting eggs in the near future too.
