6 chick rule

Exactly. Where I live, it is against the law to sell chickens as pets. They have to be marketed as livestock. The funny part about it is it's perfectly legal to keep them as pets.

Our feed store (maine) has the same rule. However, I asked if we could pay for 6 and only take home less, and they said, sure. But she recommened taking all 6 anyway, and then giving away any extras we decided we didn't want, which makes sense since there might be some roos in there. She said if we put a notice on the bulletin board we'd be sure to get a taker, especially if it was a 2-month-ish pullet.

That's an interesting thought that ithe 6-chick rule is to discourage impulse buys. And a good idea, I'd say. While we were in the store a mom came in with kids and they were all ooh-ing over the baby ducks. Bucould tell by the quetions they asked that they would NOT be happy with it once it grew a few more weeks. I was holding my breath HOPING they wouldn't buy one until the left (wmpty-handed, thank goodness). It makes me SO SAD when people don't think through things like that.... and then don't take responisibility for thier decisions, and neglect or abandon animals, spouses, kids.......

I've been told by many different places here that it's a NY state law saying that chicks can only be sold in lots of six or greater. Unfortunately, my town has an ordinance saying that you need a variance to have more then six chickens. I got six last year and one turned out to be a rooster, and we lost one over the winter. Now I have four and want more and have to buy six. Fortunately I found someone with four who is looking to give them away. I think I'll risk being over the limit.

The local farm store (in a very suburban area) has their own rule that you must buy at least two chicks as they are social animals and if only three are left, you have to buy all three so one isn't left alone.

That is the law in RI too- 4 chick minimum. They say it has to do with chicken being social animals . Also to discourage the Easter chick purchase. It is also illegal here to dye the chicks- A bunch of chicks got confiscated this year from a pet store for being dyed.
