6 month old Broody hatching First time Journal

Broody chickens often take long breaks (up to an hour) from sitting once per day, often longer when it's hot out. At 105 air temperature the eggs would develop on their own if you just left them on a countertop! I would not worry about her leaving the nest as long as she goes back to it after.

Great! I'm so glad I have all of you following!

Today I had to be away but I looked in on her before daybreak she was happy, and not hot (yayyy)
I rubbed her cheek goodbye and she didn't growl at me

The CUTEST thing I noticed when I got home at 3 pm she was out bathing I was a bit concerned thinking "Oh no did my journey stop as soon as it started?" But no, the cute thing is she had a SUBSTITUTE sitter

Tigger was sitting on them so Rambita could take a longer break! As soon as Rambita was ready she came in and Tigger left and Rambita went back to sitting! I thought that was really cool

I didn't have the camera bc I had just gotten back and I was busy with refilling puddles and ice
(It was 105 f today)


Also, I got 2 more buff eggs and gave both to her I know the parentage of each egg, bc I know my buffs eggs each has their own "signature"

So now 3 buff eggs and hubby wants me to put 1 ee egg in anyhow he wants a roo like marshmellow

Is this the first hatch you've done from Marshmellow? Or do you know what genes for egg color he carries? I also have to tell you the yogurt video was super cute. My 3 year old loves your YouTube channel, lol.

It will be the first hatch, actually my first hatch ever. I don't know much about this part, genetics etc. But I will research more.

For the ee egg, I chose my hen Guava, an ee as well, she seems to be a welsummer cross, and actually lays light brown speckled eggs she was the one that jumped up on my lap in the yogurt vid and the one pictured at the end too.

Her eggs are the largest, it's not a double yolk, and it will be easy to see if someone else layed there and remove them bc everyone else will have layed a green one.

If it's true that their personalities or character traits cangeneration down, this will be a really great bird if it hatches
Marshmellow the ee roo, is so calm with humans and his hens when I hold him there is no resistance or stiffness

Awww, we talked about how pretty Guava was! She has beautiful coloring, speckled eggs are definitely a bonus IMO. It will be interesting to see what color egg he throws if you end up with a pullet. I don't think there is any way to tell for sure what genes an EE rooster is carrying for egg color other than hatching his offspring and seeing what color they lay. I love surprises though, so I think it's exciting. I could never be a really serious breeder, I will always pick the bird with the best temperament rather than the best physical traits.

Yes! I feel similar I'm looking at all the temperaments. Both roos are sweet and calm with humans and hens, and the hens I chose are great too in personality

So tonight marks 48 hours so I'm marking tomorrow as day 3 although I started on the 19th, it was at 5 pm so...

Rambita is good and still sitting well, she didn't allow any new lays with her so it looks like she's adopted her 4 eggs well. Tonight it looks like she counted them, chirped and then rearranged them under her for the night.

I love that she's comfortable with me so I can experience this

End of day five:

Still sitting well!

I've noticed her routine...everytime Tigger comes to lay she will babysit the clutch while laying and that's when Rambita will take a longer break and dust bathe...

I remember when I was a new mom too scared to bathe unless someone was there to listen for the baby ? this Rambita situation reminds me of that

Plus anytime she comes to eat she is in SUCH a HURRY clucking softly the whole time
